Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope releases in October and you can play as Bowser

During the June 2022 Nintendo Direct Mini, Ubisoft confirmed that Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope will launch on October 20.

A new trailer describes the game’s story premise and gave a quick glimpse at the turn-based combat system. The battlefield can now be traversed in 360 degrees, a departure from the rigid linear movement that was in the first game. Mario’s arch-nemesis, Bowser, has also been revealed to be a playable character.

Ubisoft also announced a showcase to show off the game and provide more information about it on June 29 at 12 p.m. ET.

The game’s store page shows that it will include a Gold Edition that contains the base game, the season pass, and the Galactic Prestige Pack. The season pass holds upcoming DLC content such as an additional story and new heroes, quests, and battles. The Galactic Prestige Pack has three weapons skins that can be used right away.

The release date was originally leaked ahead of the presentation through Ubisoft’s store.

Nintendo’s fall lineup starts in September with Splatoon 3 and ends with Pokemon Scarlet and Violet in November. Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope fits snugly between the two in October to keep the Nintendo Switch’s exclusive content pipeline steady. The console already has had an impressive first half of the year, and these upcoming releases will close out 2022 nicely.

Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is the direct sequel to 2017’s Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle. In our review, we said, “There are plenty of nuances to find in Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, so long as you’re willing to indulge its playful side.”

Reaching perfection
Mario Kart 8 was originally released on Nintendo's Wii U system and made a splash as one of the system's big sellers -- for all that's worth. When the Nintendo Switch released, Nintendo quickly capitalized by rereleasing Mario Kart 8 with a new Deluxe subtitle. That would bring new content and modes, as well as a long-tailed DLC plan once it became clear it was going to be one of the Switch's biggest hits.

Nintendo’s Super Mario series is so monumental to the medium of video games that you might even think of the mustachioed plumber when you hear “video games” mentioned at all. From his earliest days when he battled Donkey Kong as “Jumpman.” to his latest adventures on the Nintendo Switch, to his latest movie appearance in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Mario has consistently been one of the greatest characters in video games. He’s such an iconic character that countless video games have had him as the star, and here we have ranked them.

For our list, we had two main criteria. First, the games have to be platformers -- either 2D or 3D. This eliminates Mario sports games, the Mario Kart series, role-playing games, and all the Mario Parties. Secondly, the games have to have Mario himself as the lead character. This eliminated Super Mario Land 3 and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island. In the end, we were left with 22 games. None of them are bad, but we did have to name a loser. We also chose to omit The Lost Levels and instead considered Super Mario Bros. 2 as the definitive second game in the series.

Between The Super Mario Bros. Movie and Super Mario Bros. Wonder, it’s been a banner year for the Italian video game icon – and it’s not over yet. On November 17, Nintendo will cap off a successful 2023 with the hotly anticipated Super Mario RPG. The surprising release brings back one of the plumber’s most eccentric adventures, 1996’s Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars for the Super Nintendo. It’s a neglected cult classic that’s been long overdue for some attention.

The question, though, is what kind of treatment a title like that deserves. Should Nintendo simply have rereleased it on Switch Online? Would an HD remaster suffice? Or was a full remake in order? If the Switch version is any indication, Nintendo may have found itself a little stumped with that question too.
