Foxconn ‘making preparations’ for Apple iTV production, says chairman

The Apple “iTV” rumors just keep on comin’. This time, however, the source of the report is none other than Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou, who told major Chinese English-language newspaper China Daily that his company will soon begin production of the long-speculated Apple HDTV.

China Daily reporter Gou Changxin writes that Gou indicated that Foxconn is “making preparations” for the iTV, but that “development or manufacturing ” has not yet started. Gou also reportedly said that Foxconn’s recent 46.5 percent share purchase of Sharp’s massive, high-tech LCD plant in Sakai, Japan, is part of those preparations.

Early this week, an unnamed source told CultofMac that he or she had seen Apple’s prototype HDTV, and further backed up rumors that the television would come loaded with the Siri voice-controlled virtual assistant that is currently found exclusively in the iPhone 4S. The source also said that the TV has FaceTime video chat, and will look similar to Apple’s Cinema Display monitors.

The China Daily report reiterates all of these rumors.

The Apple iTV rumor mill went into full production last year after the release of Walter Isaacson’s biography of late Apple co-founder and CEO Steve Jobs. In the book, Jobs is quoted as saying that he had “finally cracked” the problem of how to make a better television. According to The New York Times and other publications, the solution he found was Siri.

Still, it’s hard to know exactly what Apple has in store — it wouldn’t be Apple, after all, if such guesses were easy. But with even the chairman of Foxconn, Apple’s primary manufacturer, saying that an Apple television is real, the release of such a device appears all but imminent.

YouTube TV just got even better on iPhones and iPads
Multiview on YouTube TV on an iPad.

If you use the most popular live-streaming service on an iPhone or iPad, things just got even better. YouTube TV — which boasts more than 8 million subscribers — just pushed multiview live on Apple's mobile devices, as previously promised.

It works basically the same way it does on a television. YouTube TV picks the programs available in multiview, and you get them all at once, with audio coming from one of the shows. Tap another, and the audio switches. And just as before, you can get multiview for sports, news, business, or weather. (Though we definitely don't recommend watching four news channels at once in an election year.) It's just in time for March Madness, which is great, though we hope you'll be able to pick your own games instead of just sticking with the multiple viewing options YouTube TV gives. This will be great come fall, though, when the new season of NFL Sunday Ticket takes hold.

Best streaming devices for 2024: Apple TV, Roku, Fire TV, and more
An Apple TV 4K sits on a media stand.

There are two kinds of people in this world: Those who use whatever is built into their TV to access all their streaming services, and those who know there's almost certainly something better out there.

There's nothing inherently wrong with the former group of people. Smart TVs come with built-in operating systems like Roku, Amazon Fire TV, or Google TV running the show, in which case you're well-covered. And bespoke TV operating systems — like LG's webOS, Samsung's Tizen, or even Vizio's Home Screen/Smartcast — have gotten better in recent years.

The Belkin iPhone Mount with MagSafe for Apple TV 4K is one mouthful of an official name. What it does is much more simple. It is a mount for your iPhone to be used with an Apple TV 4K. And it has MagSafe to keep the phone in place. That's it.
