See how that dark Power Rangers fan film was made

The Making of POWER/RANGERS
Producer Adi Shankar and director Joseph Kahn’s gritty, unauthorized Power/Rangers short film that debuted last week prompted quite a bit of discussion regarding the long-running Power Rangers franchise and the legal issues surrounding such a project — all while racking up more than 12 million views on YouTube (as of today). The film was so popular, in fact, that Shankar revisited it this week with a “making of” feature that offered a glimpse at the project’s development — from scouting locations to final edits and screening.

Power/Rangers was created as part of Shankar’s “Bootleg Universe,” a series of short films that feature familiar actors in gritty stories based on comic books and television series. The film features Battlestar Galactica actress Katee Sackhoff and Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek as some of the characters from the original Mighty Morphin Power Rangers series.

Previous films in the series have involved Marvel Comics’ Punisher and Venom characters, as well as Judge Dredd, but Power/Rangers holds the dubious distinction of being one of the first of Shankar’s short films to come under serious fire from the owners of the rights to the characters. The video became a viral hit shortly after its debut on YouTube and Vimeo, only to be taken down when franchise owner Haim Saban challenged its validity as a fan film, then republished once it had been determined that the video did indeed fall under “fan film” status.

In the “Making Of” video for Power/Rangers, Kahn and the rest of the film’s creative team and cast can be seen scouting locations, performing in front of a green screen, and scoring the film, among other aspects of the full production process. The video concludes with Shankar hosting a screening of the film in a small theater.

It’s worth noting that a new, official movie based on the Power Rangers is currently in development, with an expected release date of July 22, 2016.

Logo for WWE Backlash France.

A WWE Premium Live Event (PLE) is heading to Lyon Metropolis for the first time for WWE Backlash France 2024. Since the formation of TKO in September 2023, WWE has prioritized global expansion. In 2024, Backlash France is the second PLE to be held outside the U.S., and it won't be the last. Five of the next six WWE PLEs will take place outside the U.S.

Heading into Backlash, WWE is entering the "American Nightmare Era." After finishing his story at WrestleMania 40, Cody Rhodes is now the Undisputed WWE Champion. A different era means a new crop of challengers for Rhodes. First up is AJ Styles, a former two-time WWE champion. Rhodes must bring his A-game if he wants to walk out of France as champion.

If you have to watch one Star Wars movie this May the 4th, stream this one
Luke looking off into the binary sunset before dying in The Last Jedi.

Every Star Wars fan has a favorite movie, and many Star Wars fans also hate at least one of the entries in one of their favorite franchises. That can make the exercise of choosing the perfect Star Wars movie to watch on May the 4th difficult. For all of the love this fan base has shown to the franchise over the years, it's also a fan base that has strong opinions about why one movie or another is worthy of your time.

This May 4, though, I'd recommend watching Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Almost undoubtedly the most controversial entry in the saga, one that makes some people furious and others jump for joy, The Last Jedi is worthy of your attention, whether you like what it's doing or not. Here are three reasons you should check it out:
