There’s going to be a Pez movie (no, seriously)

Well, that’s it, folks. Hollywood has officially run out of ideas.

There’s going to be a Pez movie.

The Three Stooges and Brothers in Law screenwriter Cameron Fay will reportedly pen a script for an animated feature based on the famous candy dispensers (and the chalky “candy” they dispense, one would think). According to Deadline, Pez Candy Inc. has entered into an agreement with Envision Media Arts (EMA) to develop the film, which is expected to be a self-aware meta-comedy that pokes fun at its own ridiculous premise.

The Pez movie will be produced by Lee Nelson (Pathfinder) and David Buelow (Celeste & Jesse Forever). EMA’s most recent project is the upcoming drama Henry Joseph Church, starring Eddie Murphy and Britt Robertson.

“Pez Candy is beloved by children and adults alike,” said EMA CEO and founder Lee Nelson in a statement accompanying the announcement. “With Cameron Fay we’ve created a world unique to Pez and a story that will touch the hearts of many.”

First introduced 88 years ago in Austria, Pez candy and its signature dispensers featuring various characters’ heads are now sold in more than 80 countries, with the dispensers becoming a popular collectible due to the wide variety of licensed properties that have adorned them over the years. The candy (and dispensers) were first introduced to U.S. markets approximately 50 years ago, and caught on like wildfire. Over 3 billion PEZ candies are now consumed in the U.S. each year, and everything from DC and Marvel comics characters to NASCAR drivers and the rock band KISS have been featured as PEZ dispensers.

There’s no word on what sort of story a Pez movie will follow, but given that we’ve already seen plans for a movie about emojis move forward, anything is possible at this point.

Basically, we should all brace ourselves for Twizzlers: The Movie. It’s only a matter of time.

There’s a case to be made that the Xenomorph is the greatest movie monster ever conceived. It’s certainly among the most iconic. H.R. Giger, the Swiss artist who designed the title creature of Alien, took inspiration from Francis Bacon and Rolls-Royce, and emerged with a biomechanical killing machine that's instantly identifiable in silhouette. Cross a tapeworm with a shark, a cockroach, a dinosaur, and a motorcycle, and you’re close to describing the nightmare Giger and director Ridley Scott inflicted on unsuspecting moviegoers in 1979.

A monster so unforgettable sells itself. One look is all it would take to know that you had to see the cursed thing in action. And yet, there’s barely a glimpse of the alien in any of the original advertising for Alien. The beast is completely absent from the posters, and the trailer contains only a borderline-subliminal flash of its earliest larval stage, the face hugger. Unless you subscribed to a select few science fiction fan magazines — the ones boasting some enticing behind-the-scenes images, all part of a final “hard push” to get asses in seats — you were going into Alien blind, completely unprepared for the exact nature of the threat faced by its cast of unlucky galaxy-traversing characters.
