UK Cinema staff will go full 007 to combat piracy during Bond release

Beefed up security and staff in full military-grade night vision goggles — it’s how far cinemas in the UK are willing to go to combat piracy of their nation’s latest blockbuster, according to the Telegraph.

When Spectre, the 24th film in the James Bond series, is released next month, staff at cinemas aim to stop pirates — who often use pinhole cameras hidden in things like hats, popcorn buckets, or backpacks — from pirating their own copy of the film for distribution. Piracy is a multi-million dollar industry in the UK, where numerous Internet personalities fight to be the first to get a new film online.

Night vision goggles are nothing new to UK cinema, according to Kieron Sharp, director of the Federation Against Copyright Theft, but they will be used more readily as part of the added security measures being put in place for Spectre.

“They still do the sweeps around the auditoriums with the night vision glasses regardless of the film,” he tells the Telegraph, “But sometimes extra security is put in place for things like Bond.”

Given the anticipated popularity of the latest Daniel Craig-starring project—for which Spectre is likely to be his last onscreen effort as the man in the black tuxedo—it makes sense that industry members are afraid of piracy issues.

They do, in fact, catch people pirating films this way. Last year, Phillip Danks went to prison for a little less than three years for filming The Fast and the Furious 6 and distributing it online.

That said, a poorly-filmed version of Spectre will probably make its way to the Internet almost immediately regardless of what they do, just like it does for almost every other blockbuster that hits the silver screen.

But hey, maybe you’ll get to see a popcorn-slinger wearing some Rainbow Six headgear, which is, you know, pretty darn cool either way.

What’s new on Paramount+ in May 2024
The cast of Evil.

Evil is coming to Paramount+ in May. To be clear, we're talking about Evil season 4, the final run of episodes for the supernatural drama series that began on CBS. And it's not the only highlight this month. The Chi season 6 will premiere on May 10, and Lolla: The Story of Lollapalooza will follow on May 21. Younger viewers and kids in your family may also be happy to hear that PAW Patrol season 9 will be streaming as of May 1.

Paramount+ also has a strong lineup of movies in May, including Oscar-winner No Country for Old Men, Ghost, Stand By Me, Annihilation, and more. However, certain titles are only available on Paramount+ with Showtime. Keep that in mind when looking over our roundup of everything new on Paramount+ in May 2024. The shows and movies below marked with an asterisk (*) are only available on Paramount+ with Showtime. Everything leaving Netflix in May 2024
Russell Crowe and Guy Pierce as Bud and Exley looking into a car in L.A. Confidential.

Netflix is always at its best when it has a robust lineup of movies from other studios to go along with its original films. But in May, Netflix is going to lose a lot of great flicks, because several of its movies on loan from rival studios are going back home. This month, that includes L.A. Confidential, the first four Hunger Games movies, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, and even Where the Crawdads Sing, which enjoyed a nearly 18-month run on Netflix following its theatrical release.

Fox's short-lived sitcom The Mick is also departing Netflix, which tends to shed movies more often than it does shows. But there is an upside to this month's content migration: May has a full 31 days and a holiday weekend. That should go a long way toward helping plan your movie nights so you can catch these films and shows before they depart.
