Jennifer Lawrence takes Bradley Cooper to task in new Joy clip

Joy marks the third time that director David O. Russell has teamed with Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, and Robert De Niro. The first two — Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle — were both massive successes and the all-star squad is looking to go three-for-three with this latest project.

Even without revealing much about the film’s plot, the first two trailers had us intrigued, and late last week, 20th Century Fox released a new clip for the film that … has us intrigued even without revealing much about the film’s plot.

Entitled, You Said That, the clip showcases Jennifer Lawrence (Joy) taking Bradley Cooper’s character to task for something he said, but apparently didn’t back up with his actions. Again, we don’t know exactly what’s going on here, but there are a couple of interesting takeaways.

First: Jennifer Lawrence is magnetic. Point blank, period. There’s a reason she’s the highest-paid actress in the biz and, even in a 40-second, out-of-context clip, she’s capable of giving you the chills.

Second: The more we see of this film, the more it looks like a star vehicle designed to position Lawrence for some hardware come awards season. Even the clip we’re given is more “look how well J-Law can act” than “look how awesome this movie is going to be.” While these sorts of family epics are often overly ambitious and have a tendency to fall flat, if this works, it will be because Lawrence made it work, which in turn may put her in the Best Actress conversation.

You can watch the clip above, and we’ll leave you with a snippet of the official synopsis provided by Fox, the film’s distributor. Joy hits theaters Dec. 25, 2015.

“Joy is the wild story of a family across four generations centered on the girl who becomes the woman who founds a business dynasty and becomes a matriarch in her own right. Betrayal, treachery, the loss of innocence and the scars of love, pave the road in this intense emotional and human comedy about becoming a true boss of family and enterprise facing a world of unforgiving commerce …”

From Ryan Gosling to Furiosa: a preview of 2024’s promising blockbuster summer season
A 2024 summer blockbuster movie preview header image.

Summer has long been the biggest time of the year for Hollywood. In recent years, however, a glut of superhero movies and increasing reliance on recognizable brands, franchises, and pieces of intellectual property have made the summer movie season feel a bit, well, stale.

Fortunately, it doesn't look like that'll be the case this year. 2024's summer movie slate is shaping up to be the best in years. It promises to have a little bit of everything for everyone, whether that be some long-awaited sequels and prequels, a few ambitious mainstream horror offerings, or several big, new swings from a handful of legendary Hollywood auteurs.

The 10 most popular shows on Max right now
Conan O'Brien in Conan O'Brien Must Go.

If there's a shocker this month on HBO and Max, it's that the highly touted original series The Sympathizer is only in the ninth slot on the list of the most popular shows on Max. Considering that series has Robert Downey Jr. in multiple roles, we expected it to do a lot better. Instead, the new No. 1 title on this list is Conan O'Brien Must Go, a comedy travel series featuring one of the quirkiest late-night talk show hosts from the last 25 years.

HBO's comedy and political talk shows, Real Time with Bill Maher and Last Week Tonight with John Oliver, both returned to the list this month. And unsurprisingly, The Jinx is once again a true crime hit nine years after its previous season premiered on HBO. Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV and the anime series Ninja Kamui also had strong showings this month. But with only one episode left in the first season of Ninja Kamui, there may be a new show in its place on this list next month.

Margot Robbie may star in Rob Liefeld’s Avengelyne comic book movie
Avengelyne cover illustrated by John Stinsman.

In the realm of comic books, Avengelyne isn't exactly a well-known heroine. That's largely because she's had a sporadic publishing history since her debut in 1995. However, Avengelyne's co-creator, Rob Liefeld, is reportedly near a deal that will bring his character to the big screen, potentially with Barbie's Margot Robbie in the title role.

Liefeld, who is best-known for co-creating Deadpool with writer Fabian Nicieza, co-created Avengelyne in 1995 with former Vampirella model Cathy Christian. The character used Christian's likeness, and she was envisioned as a fallen angel who was cast out of heaven for questioning God's love for humanity. Once on Earth, Avengelyne is stripped of most of her powers and direction until she discovers demons hidden among humanity who plan to bring about hell on Earth. To save the world, Avengelyne confronts the demons and becomes humanity's protector.
