Will my Mac get macOS 14?

MacOS 14 is coming and coming soon, and thanks to Apple’s big keynote address at WWDC 2023, we now know what it can do, what it’s called, and who can get it. The next generation Mac operating system is codenamed Sonoma, and it’s bringing gaming to macOS in a big way, as well as improving video calls, and security. It’s going to be available for most modern Mac and MacBook users, but there are some legacy systems that are unfortunately being left out in the cold.

Wondering if your Mac can get macOS 14? Here’s everything we know about what Macs are and aren’t compatible with Sonoma.

Which Macs support macOS 14?

If your Mac is one of the following, you’ll be able to update your Mac to macOS 14 Sonoma when it debuts later this year:

MacBook Air from 2018 or later
MacBook Pro from 2018 or later
Mac Mini from 2018 or later
Mac Pro from 2019 or later
iMac from 2019 or later
iMac Pro from 2017 or newer
Mac Studio from 2022 or newer

If you’re running an older Mac or MacBook, however, you’ll have to stick to macOS 13, Ventura. It’s still a great operating system, but you won’t get all of the shiny new features that Apple has been working on lately.

When will macOS 14 be available?

Apple didn’t announce a date for a general release of macOS 14, but if past releases are any indicator, it’ll be available almost immediately for select developers, with a general beta release coming later. Expect a full release later this year, probably sometime in the Fall.

How do I download macOS 14?

MacOS 14 is available for select developers now and will be rolling out to beta testers in the coming weeks before a general release later this year. You can sign up to be part of Apple’s beta program, here. Whether you get it as part of the beta or wider release, though, you’ll be able to download macOS 14 either through your existing macOS install or by visiting the App Store. Want Apple’s best Mac Studio? Prepare to pay over $14,000

Apple just launched its new Mac Studio alongside the latest MacBook Air. The new Studio comes equipped with either an M4 Max or an M3 Ultra chip, and while it sounds mighty powerful and fully capable of rivaling some of the best Macs, it's also crazy expensive. If you want to configure it with all the bells and whistles Apple offers, you'll have to pay over $14,500 -- a huge increase over the previous generation.

The new Mac Studio is certainly nothing to turn your nose up at. The M4 Max configuration starts with a 14-core CPU, 32-core GPU, and a 16-core neural engine. You're also getting 36GB of unified memory and 512GB of SSD storage. This will set you back $1,999, which is the same as the last-gen Mac Studio that came equipped with the M2 Max and the M2 Ultra chips, so we're all good.

Apple has just launched a new MacBook Air equipped with its M4 chip, bringing improved performance and efficiency to one of the company’s best MacBooks. The long-rumored update means that all of Apple’s laptops now come with the M4 chip.

As expected, the M4 MacBook Air is more of an evolution than a revolution. The M4 chip means a slight improvement in terms of performance compared to the previous M3 version, but there are few changes elsewhere. According to Apple, the M4 MacBook Air can perform tasks like video editing and photo editing up to 2x faster than its M1 counterpart -- so upgrading could be worth it for M1 owners.

Apple’s new Mac Studio breaks records in more ways than one

Apple has announced a new Mac Studio to add to the company’s range of high-end Macs. In a surprising twist, the new Mac Studio will come in two flavors, one containing the M4 Max and one containing a previously unreleased chip: The M3 Ultra. It's safe to say that this Mac Studio will break several records, all thanks to the staggering amounts of unified memory and storage that it's equipped with -- but also largely thanks to the eye-watering price.

The M3 Ultra is a new addition to the lineup. Apple says that it's built for AI and promises to deliver up to 2.5x the performance of the M1 Ultra, although there's no mention of how much faster it'll be than the M2 Ultra. M3 Ultra, and thus the Mac Studio, will offer support for up to 512GB of unified memory, which, as Apple says, is "the most ever in a personal computer."
