BioShock Creators Plan to Debut New Game Next Week

Let the guessing begin! Irrational games, the development house behind BioShock, Tribes and System Shock 2- are planning a press conference for Thursday August 12, where they will debut the trailer for their newest, unknown game.

The speculation as to what that game is, has been steadily building for months. Since the release of BioShock in 2007, no word has leaked as to what Irrational would be developing next (BioShock 2 was developed by 2K Marin). Some have suggested that it could be a new entry into the SWAT franchise, but that is just guesswork at the moment.

Irrational Games was purchased in 2006 by Take-Two Interactive and renamed 2K Boston and 2K Australia.  The company recently announced that it would be reclaiming its original name.  2K Australia has since merged with 2K Marin, and are currently working on reboot of the game XCom, due out in 2011.

Xbox is nearing its quarter-century of oversized controllers, achievement hunting, and Halo nights. To celebrate its 25th birthday, Microsoft is letting players open a few birthday presents early. The company has released a free collection of gamerpics, profile backgrounds, themes, and a dynamic Xbox console background created by community artists Klobrille and Ben Kenobi.

The artwork is available now, ahead of the original Xbox’s 25th anniversary on November 15. Microsoft is also giving players a commemorative 25th anniversary profile badge. All you need to do is sign in to your Xbox account through a console, PC, or the Xbox mobile app before the end of 2026 to receive it.

The fate of physical game discs seems to be set in stone, with an all-digital library becoming increasingly inevitable. Microsoft, though, may at least give Xbox owners a way to bring their shelves full of physical games along for the journey.

A leaked Microsoft roadmap sent to game publishers details the planned rollout of Xbox’s Disc-to-Digital program alongside a much larger backwards-compatibility push. The document reportedly targets August for general availability, October for the full launch of original Xbox games on PC, and a gradual Xbox 360 rollout beginning in 2027.
