Gears of War 2, Hand of Fate free for Xbox Live Gold subscribers in February

Xbox Live Gold subscribers have another prime batch of free games to look forward to next month, as Microsoft revealed that Gears of War 2 and Hand of Fate are among February’s scheduled freebies.

As in recent months, Xbox One owners will be able to download and play all of next month’s featured Games With Gold titles, including Xbox 360 releases, via the platform’s backward compatibility technology.

All throughout next month, Xbox Live members with an active Gold subscription will be able to download Defiant Development’s action-RPG Hand of Fate free of charge. Featuring deck-building mechanics at its core, Hand of Fate deals players a series of digital cards that manifest themselves during gameplay as enemies, weapons, and dungeon floors.

Hand of Fate features combo-driven combat in the vein of Rocksteady’s Batman Arkham series, and its randomly assigned gameplay elements ensure an unpredictable and challenging experience throughout.

Xbox One and Xbox 360 owners alike can download a free copy of the Xbox Live Arcade release Sacred Citadel between February 1st and the 15th. A spinoff in publisher Deep Silver’s Sacred series, Sacred Citadel offers up gameplay similar to arcade-styled brawlers, and serves as a prequel to the storyline featured in Sacred 3.

Between February 16th and the 29th, Xbox One and Xbox 360 players can also grab Gears of War 2 free of charge. A follow-up entry in Epic Games’ popular third-person shooter series, Gears of War 2 was recently given away as an incentive for Gears of War Ultimate Edition early adopters, but will soon be available for all Xbox Live Gold subscribers as part of the Games With Gold program.

February’s final Games With Gold release is Styx: Master of Shadows, a third-person stealth game from Cyanide Studio that features character-building mechanics and RPG elements. Styx will be free to download for service subscribers from February 16th through March 15th.

If you love 2D platformers, you can’t miss Bionic Bay
A man jumps through electrified platforms in Bionic Bay.

I don't envy anyone trying to make a great 2D puzzle platformer in 2025. It's a very crowded genre, and sometimes it can feel like there aren't many more ways to spin it into something new. Games like Neva and Planet of Lana are gorgeous, but neither breaks new gameplay ground. It's a high ceiling to reach if you're looking to do something new, but Bionic Bay gets it done in impressive fashion.

At a glance, the new game from publisher Kepler Interactive checks a lot of boxes. It's a moody tone piece that looks quite a bit like Limbo. The adventure takes players through a gantlet of 2D levels steeped in biomechanical mystery. Levels are creepy and full of well-placed traps that lead to countless deaths. Where Bionic Bay sets itself apart from dozens of games with that description, though, is a an ingenious item swapping puzzle hook and a speedier pace that's usually reserved for speed-focused action games. Those two pieces are enough to make it one of the tightest games of its kind I've played so far in the 2020s.

Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound is a good reminder that 2D games still rule
A pair of eyes appears in the sky in Ninja Gaiden Ragebound.

Ninja Gaiden is back with a vengeance. Last month, Koei Tecmo surprise released Ninja Gaiden 2 Black, an Unreal Engine 5 remake of an Xbox 360 classic. It’ll follow up on that later this year with Ninja Gaiden 4, the first original game in the series in over a decade. That would be a busy year for any franchise, let alone a long formant one returning to form, but it isn’t stopping there. This year will also bring Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, a 2D spin on the series from the retro masters at Dotemu and The Game Kitchen.

It’s a perfect series for that kind of treatment. After all, Ninja Gaiden began its life in arcades and on the NES as an old school beat-em-up. Can that formula still resonate with modern audiences who know the series more for its beloved 3D installments that defined the Xbox 360 generation? Based on my first hands-on demo, which toured me through a handful of Ragebound’s levels over an hour, Dotemu is cooking up another polished retro revival that isn’t just out to cash in on nostalgia. It’s a return to a classic genre that was neither broke, nor in need of fixing.
