Everything we know about Greedfall 2: The Dying World

After 2014’s Dragon Age: Inquisition, fans of the BioWare-style RPG were left with nothing to sink their teeth into for years. The next Mass Effect game failed to deliver the experience fans of the series were hoping for, and the less said about Anthem the better. This gap in the market allowed an up-and-coming developer, Spiders, to try to fill that gap with its own new IP. Greedfall was a direct attempt to give fans of those old RPGs the experience BioWare had moved away from. It was technically rough in many ways, but Greedfall found an audience and plenty fans for being a solid RPG with a unique setting and story.

That breakout game was successful enough for the team to announce a sequel — or prequel, rather — called Greedfall 2: The Dying World. Aiming to be bigger, more ambitious, and hopefully more technically sound than the first, this new RPG has more competition and higher expectations than the first game. While we still have a lot to learn about this new adventure, we’re excited to begin another expedition to the island of Teer Fradee in this colonial-themed title. Here’s everything we know so far about Greedfall 2: The Dying World.

The disappointing part about the reveal of Greedfall 2: The Dying World is the release window. No date is set, and all we know is that Spiders intends to deliver the game in 2024. Assuming no delays, that still leaves us with a long wait ahead for this sequel. Clearly, this game is very early on — as we see and learn more, we will get a better idea of when it will come out.

Platforms

This is another vague area that makes us more confident that Greedfall 2: The Dying World is still quite early in development. Right now, the game is only stated to be coming to “PC and consoles.” PC is great to know, and we would assume a 2024 release window, at the earliest, would make it a current-gen only game, but it does leave room for it to be a console exclusive, timed or otherwise. The first Greedfall was multiplatform, and even got upgrades for current-gen systems, so it’s most likely that PS5 and Xbox Series X and S players will be able to pick this game up.

Trailer

GreedFall 2 - The Dying World | Announcement Trailer

Greedfall 2: The Dying World was announced with a short trailer that is more of a concept trailer than anything too substantial, and certainly lacks any real gameplay.

We open on some figures in a forest who appear to be praying as a large horned creature approaches, cutting to a colonial man with a gun and an armored dog walking through the grass. The natives of Teer Fradee begin to glow, with more soldiers seeming to approach. We get a nice, up-close look at a smooth, lizard-wolf monster thing ahead of some more natives that encounter the colonials. The two sides stand off, with the colonials outnumbering and outgunning the two natives, before cutting to black and we hear a gunshot.

The trailer ends in the hold of a ship with captured natives being taken to an industrialized city.

That alone all fits within the world and lore set up by Greedfall, but the real details come from official statements about the game. The biggest plot point to note is that Greedfall 2: The Dying World is a prequel to the first game, and will take place three years before the story of De Sardet, your main character from that game. This time around, rather than being an outsider to the island of Teer Fradee, you will play as a native who has been abducted from their home and moved to the main continent, basically completely flipping the script of the first game.

Again, you can expect a complex game of multiple political factions, conflicting powers, and the Malichor plague that was the impetuous of the first game’s plot. After earning, or perhaps taking, your freedom, the game will open up to a sprawling plot that will change based on your actions and choices.

Gameplay

We haven’t seen any glimpses of how the game will play, but again can piece together a few ideas. First, the announcement does confirm that Greedfall 2: The Dying World will be “an RPG that focuses on story and player choice but also includes new gameplay in the form of more tactical combat and revisits the unique universe created by its predecessor.” While combat in the first game was serviceable, we’re glad to hear that they’re looking to revamp it somehow, though it is still unclear just how that will work. We don’t anticipate it going fully turn-based, but perhaps more options for managing your party and giving controls in combat will be implemented.

Director Jehanne Rousseau stated that Greedfall 2: The Dying World will have “bigger and more diverse environments” and that players “will meet new companions and new factions.” Plus — and again this more confirms what we expect rather than sheds any light on new features — the option to solve problems via combat or dialogue will return. The relationships among party members, factions, NPCs, and how you build your character were what really made Greedfall shine, so having those deep role-playing systems return is great to hear.

Multiplayer

Not only did Greedfall not have multiplayer but no game developed by Spiders has had any type of multiplayer component or mode. For this prequel, we fully expect another meaty single-player game with plenty of replay value, but no multiplayer modes to speak of.

DLC

Again, we can only look at the previous game to guess at what could happen with DLC for Greedfall 2: The Dying World, but the first game did get one expansion titled The De Vespe Conspiracy, which introduced a new area, plot, enemies, gear, and faction. This type of expansion could easily work for this game as well, inserting a new quest and area prior to the game’s conclusion, or even possibly after to tie this game more directly with the first. This is all speculation, though, so stay tuned for any official word.

Pre-order

2024 is still a long way off, and even as it inches closer, we won’t get any pre-order details for Greedfall 2: The Dying World until a firm date is set. Once we get that information, plus any details on possible special editions or bonuses, we will update you on everything they have and how to get your hands on them.

The best vocations in Dragon’s Dogma 2

Your Vocation defines your role in combat in Dragon's Dogma 2. Everything from your skills to what weapons and armor you can use is tied to this class. You will pick from just a handful at the beginning of the game, but can easily change Vocations later on, as well as unlock more than twice as many new options than what you start with. It can take a while to really get a feel for a Vocation and how it performs in combat, as well as to look through all of its skills and augments, before knowing if it's worth sticking with to level up. Personal preference will play a part to some degree, but these Vocations have the most potential to make you the strongest Arisen in history.
The best vocations in Dragon's Dogma 2

You can pick from 4 Vocations at the start of Dragon's Dogma 2, but will end up with a total of 10 by the end of the game if you unlock them all. New Vocations are unlocked by completing quests, but they are almost unmissable. Four Vocations -- the Magick Archer, Mystic Spearhand, Trickster, and Warfarer -- can only be used by your character and not any Pawns.
Warfarer
There's very little downside to being a jack-of-all-trades in Dragon's Dogma 2, which is exactly what the Warfarer is. This is the only Vocation that can use any weapon in the game AND learn any skill from other Vocations. This is the only Vocation that really lets you build whatever class you want and gives you the ability to adapt to any situation you find yourself in. The main downside to this class is it has the lowest base stats, but that is a small price to pay for how versatile you can be.
Mystic Spearhand
Hybrid Vocations are all quite powerful, but we put the Mystic Spearhand at the top of the heap. This class turns you into a fighter that can take advantage of magic to output crazy damage. The two almost overpowered abilities you get here are the ability to slow enemies for a short time and to create a magical mimic that doubles all your actions. It is great for both crowd control and large single targets, but takes a while to unlock and lacks some range.
Warrior
If you're going to be a straight-up melee fighter, you might as well hit with the biggest weapon you can, right? The Warrior swings swords large enough to make Guts blush and is a full-on tank. You won't be doing anything fancy with this vocation beyond charging up and swinging as hard as possible. The obvious drawback is any flying or ranged enemy will counter you, so bring some Pawns in those classes to cover your bases.
Sorcerer
For those who fancy themselves a pure mage, stick to the Sorcerer over the actual Mage vocation. While the Mage is more focused on healing, it is the Sorcerer who gets the best offensive spells you will want to be casting. If you have a second Sorcerer with you, you can even sync up and decrease your casting time. If not, you will need some tanks to take aggro while you deal with some slightly long casting times and low total health.
Thief
As far as the starting Vocations go, the Thief is the one we find the most fun and viable for the entire game. This is a light and speedy build focused on critical hits and being able to climb and hang on to large beasts. Once on, you have a number of great skills to stagger and knock down an enemy so the rest of your squad to gang up on it. Just don't get hit because you're one of the squishier Vocations.

Dragon’s Dogma 2: release date speculation, trailers, gameplay, and more

In a world where even the smallest audiences are being catered to with sequels like Neo: The World Ends With You and No More Heroes 3, there's basically no game that doesn't have a chance to come back in some form. In one of the latest examples, a small but passionate fanbase has been waiting patiently for a sequel to the very ambitious Dragon's Dogma. This action RPG came out next to some stiff competition in 2012, and despite having some great mechanics and systems plus a re-release, it never hit mainstream success. With the creator and director moving on to work on other games, this series was presumed dead for a long time.

As soon as Capcom announced that it would be celebrating the 10-year anniversary of Dragon's Dogma, fans immediately predicted the announcement of a sequel. After all, why else would Capcom celebrate an anniversary for a franchise it had no intention of continuing? As it turns out, we were all correct. Dragon's Dogma 2 is finally being worked on. The excitement of this announcement has spilled out beyond the fans of the original, leading many to wonder why they should be excited about this sequel. For all that and more, here's everything we know about Dragon's Dogma 2.
