Titanfall 2, one of the best shooters ever, will be free on PlayStation Plus

Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment first kicked off their relationship with Titanfall, a unique take on first-person shooters that introduced walking mechanical suits to the formula. That formula was perfected in Titanfall 2, and if you haven’t played its excellent campaign or multiplayer mode yet, you can do so for free with PlayStation Plus next month.

Available beginning December 3 and running through January 6, Titanfall 2 will be available completely free to those with a PlayStation Plus subscription. It offers a more refined and deeper competitive multiplayer mode than the original game, with customizable Titan classes and tons of different weapons and abilities to use. It also has some of the best map design in any first-person shooter, with spots for snipers to pick off targets, wall-running opportunities, and flatter areas perfect for Titan-versus-Titan combat. Downloadable content like additional maps have all been free, so you’ll be able to experience the full game with anyone else on PS4.

What Titanfall 2 has that its predecessor was lacking altogether is a single-player campaign, and it is not a tacked-on mode to appease players. With time-traveling mechanics, platforming challenges, huge set pieces, and surprisingly good writing, the campaign is one of the best of the console generation, and it serves as a great foundation for learning what you’ll be doing in the other modes. If you’ve been playing Respawn’s battle royale shooter Apex Legends, you’ll probably recognize some weapons, too.

Also free for PlayStation Plus subscribers in December is Monster Energy Supercross: The Official Video Game, which contrary to one Twitter user’s joke, is not another name for Death Stranding. It probably won’t take up as much of your time as Respawn’s masterpiece, but it does include a track editor for those who want to play around with their own designs and see what other players have to offer.

Before December 3, PlayStation Plus members can still download this month’s free games, Nioh and Outlast 2. Nioh is a tough-as-nails Souls-like game set in feudal Japan. It’s filled with dangerous monsters and tons of different weapons and combat customization options. Outlast 2, meanwhile, is the sequel to the groundbreaking first-person horror game, which eschews combat for running and escape tactics.

PlayStation acknowledges Jak and Daxter fans with March’s PS Plus game lineup

Sony today unveiled the March 2024 lineup of new games for the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra catalog. Jak and Daxter fans, whom PlayStation and Naughty Dog rarely acknowledge, got a win today as the PSP version of Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier is getting rereleased for the first time via PlayStation Plus Premium on March 19.

Jak and Daxter: The Lost Frontier was released for PSP and PS2 in 2009 and is the closest thing we've ever gotten to a Jak 4. Although it's not as well-polished as Naughty Dog's trilogy, it's an important piece of Jak and Daxter history that wasn't easily playable outside of original hardware until this month. Hopefully, this sets the stage for PS Plus Premium rerelease of Daxter will eventually happen, although that isn't confirmed at this time.

You need to try PlayStation VR2’s most psychedelic game yet

You know that it's a busy year for gaming when a project by an industry legend launches with hardly any fanfare. That's exactly what happened in February 2023 with Akka Arrh. Created by Jeff Minter and his eccentric studio Llamasoft, the neon-tinted shooter is a remake of a 1982 Atari game that never saw the light of day after being deemed too difficult. Minter got the greenlight to revive the project, bringing it to life as a retro arcade shooter built in his unmistakable style.

While the project was exciting for game historians, it didn't exactly crack into the mainstream (it only has 37 user reviews on Steam). Thankfully, Akka Arrh getting a second chance to shine this week as its new PlayStation 5 version adds PlayStation VR2 support. While that might not be enough to make it a commercial hit, it does give PSVR2 owners a good reason to dust off their headset and check out a delightfully oddball project from one of gaming's true visionaries.
It's a trip
Akka Arrh is the rare example of a game that might be easier to explain on paper than in practice. In this throwback arcade shooter, players control a stationary ship that's tasked with protecting pods from attacking aliens. To fend off foes, players drop bombs that blow up in a different geometric pattern on each level's map. Every time an enemy touches that blast radius, it blows up in the same pattern, chaining to other enemies. The goal is to keep an uninterrupted chain going as long as possible by using a limited number of bullets to knock out foes that can't be destroyed by bombs and grabbing power-ups by hovering the cursor over them.

You need to play this charming indie before it leaves PlayStation Plus

Tchia will leave the PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra game catalog on March 19. And you really need to play this charming open-world adventure that I called "a new coming-of-age classic" in a four-star review before it's gone.

Released in March 2023, Awaceb and Kepler Interactive's Tchia is an open-world indie adventure heavily inspired by The Legend of Zelda titles like Breath of the Wild and The Wind Waker. It stands out by transporting players to a world inspired by the Pacific islands of New Caledonia and immersing them in its vibrant culture and mythology while telling a captivating coming-of-age story.
