PS4’s ‘Spider-Man’ adds two new and free Fantastic Four suits

Marvel’s Fantastic Four superhero team hasn’t exactly been treated all that well in recent years. The most recent film version was savaged by critics, and the comic series was even canceled as Fox and Marvel continued to compete with their own adaptations. But things are looking better for Mister Fantastic and company, as the team is now represented with new free suits in Marvel’s Spider-Man on PlayStation 4.

Available as part of patch 1.14, Spider-Man has added two new suits based on the Fantastic Four. The first is a costume Spider-Man actually wore during a crossover event in an issue of Amazing Spider-Man, during which he borrowed one of the team’s suits and then put a bag over his face to conceal his identity. Sure, Mister Fantastic is a handsome guy, but we don’t think Peter is ugly enough to have to wear a bag over his face during his crime-fighting sessions! The suit is, appropriately enough, called the “Bombastic Bag-Man” suit.

Also included in the update is the Future Foundation suit, which is all black-and-white and features sharp, menacing eyes in Spider-Man’s mask. During this period in the comics, Spider-Man was a member of the organization along with some members of the Fantastic Four.

Spider-Man is certainly no stranger when it comes to ffan service in its suits thus far. In addition to standard suits like the “Advanced” suit, the game allows you to unlock suits based on the Scarlet Spider, his original wrestler costume, Iron Spider, and the vintage comic book, to name a few. You can even swing around wearing just underwear and a mask, presumably disarming enemies with laughter before you go in for the finishing blow.

The game has certainly resonated with fans, becoming one of the biggest PlayStation 4 hits and having the fastest-selling first three months of any superhero game in history. It comes as Spider-Man is also experiencing great acclaim in film, both with the live-action Marvel movies and the animated Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, which has been nominated for Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is available now as a PlayStation 4 exclusive.

The best Suit Tech upgrades in Spider-Man 2
Spider-Man soars through the air in a biomechanical suit in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 doesn't hold anything back when it comes to expanding on everything done in the first game. You have two Spider-Men to control, more districts to explore, tons of side quests and activities to do to gather upgrade materials, more skill trees, and gadgets, and on top of all that there are Suit Tech upgrades. By the time you unlock them, you may feel overwhelmed with the number of things to invest in, but these may be the most important upgrades to keep track of. Like the shared skill tree, these upgrades apply to both characters at once and can make the difficulty curve of the game far smoother by buffing up some very important stats on your characters. If you're feeling a bit burned out on all the options Spider-Man 2 already throws at you, we'll break down the best Suit Tech upgrades you should unlock ASAP.
Best Suit Tech upgrades

Suit Tech upgrades apply all unlocked buffs to both characters and are divided into unique categories. Each one has a tree that takes more resources to unlock the higher-tier upgrades, but it also has two branches. You always unlock both options in a branch when you reach them, but can only equip one at a time.
Health
Speccing into health is your first and top priority. The main buffs here are the Amazing, Spectacular, and Ultimate health upgrades that each increase your base HP by 10 points. You may not feel health is all that necessary to buff in the early game, but once you start facing bosses and the late-game grunts who are far more aggressive, you'll be begging for more health at all times.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 sets an incredibly high bar for future PS5 games
EMBARGOED FOR 9/15 8 AM PT Miles leaps through the air in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

When Sony set out to highlight the power of the PS5 and its SSD, it did so with a modified version of Marvel's Spider-Man. We were treated to a flythrough of the city from end to end at speeds greater than even our web-slinging hero could hope to match without a hiccup or drop in graphical quality. That makes it fitting that the first game that feels like it fully lives up to the promises the PS5 was sold on is none other than Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

This generation has had a notably more drawn-out separation from the previous. Nearly all of Sony's first-party releases, including God of War Ragnarok and Horizon Forbidden West, have seen dual releases on PS4 and PS5. Having played the technically astounding Spider-Man 2, it now seems clear that developers had been holding back to get their games to run on older hardware. Even Insomniac's own Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart, a PS5 exclusive, now feels like an opening act that was warming us up for the headliner. Spider-Man 2 finally feels like the first game that could not exist on any console other than the PS5.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 is a more sinister superhero power fantasy
Peter attacks enemies with the Symbiote Suit in Marvel's Spider-Man 2.

Despite the fact that they star superheroes enduring tragic losses, Marvel’s Spider-Man and its Miles Morales spinoff aren’t dark games. Both are playful summer blockbusters full of comedic quips, light-hearted teen drama, and colorful action set pieces that even surpass the excitement of the web-slinger’s cinematic outings. They’re open-world playgrounds that allow players to gleefully zip around while foiling the occasional bad guy. When I first sat down with a two-hour demo of Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 earlier this week, it seemed like that energy would continue as expected.

The first leg of my demo had a familiar positivity to it as I joked around with Miles Morales’ pals, solved some science puzzles, and stopped some low-level criminals from stealing a drum set. But there was something more sinister bubbling that would rise to the surface by the end of my session – a dreariness that threatened to corrupt its lovable Spider-men like a pitch-black symbiote.
