You can get what you want: Rolling Stones headphones offered to band’s true fans

You may call yourself a Rolling Stones fan, but are you ready to prove it? Spotify and Master & Dynamic have teamed up to allow the band’s biggest fans to put their money where their ears are.

On Wednesday, Master & Dynamic announced that it will be creating a custom version of its MH40 headphones customized for Rolling Stones fans. There is a catch, however: you can’t just buy them. Instead, you’ll need to prove that you’re a true fan of the band by using your Spotify account.

In order to be chosen as eligible to buy the headphones, users must first be Spotify Premium subscribers. They will also have to be deemed to be “Superfans” of the Rolling Stones, which is determined “by length and depth of listening on Spotify,” according to the press release Master & Dynamic issued.

Only 1,962 of the headphones will be produced — a tip of the hat to the year the band was formed. The custom headphones, unlike the standard MH40 headphones, feature the band’s iconic logo emblazoned on the side of the ear cups, a commemorative plaque on the inside of the ear cups, a headphone stand, and a few Easter eggs that Master & Dynamic is leaving for fans to find themselves.

Fans who have met the above criteria will receive an email with a private link allowing them to purchase the custom MH40 headphones. The price will be $500, which is $100 more than the retail price of the standard MH40s. Whether or not the extra money is worth it to you probably says a lot about how much you love the Rolling Stones.

Fans of the band who aren’t Spotify users do have a glimmer of hope: Master & Dynamic says that the headphones will go on sale to the public via its website on July 13, assuming they haven’t already sold out.

Wiim Ultra.

As promised, Wiim has officially taken the wraps off its new network music streamer, the Wiim Ultra -- a slick aluminum device with a color touchscreen, physical volume knob, and a dedicated, front-facing 3.5mm headphone output. We also now know the price: It will be $329 when it hits Amazon sometime between July 1 and September 30.

Wiim also promised that it would reveal another new device, and it turns out to be the Wiim Amp Pro, a beefed-up version of the highly rated Wiim Amp that launched earlier this year. It will sell for $369 when it arrives on Amazon around the same time as the Ultra.

The 10 most popular streaming services, ranked by subscriber count
The Netflix home screen.

Let's start this with a caveat or two: If you're going to compare streaming services merely by the number of subscribers they have, it's not exactly a fair fight. Not all services are available in the same places. Nor does the number of subscribers really address the "worth" of a streaming service. Or whether it's easy to use, or if the apps are any good. Or, for that matter, if a given streaming service has what you want to watch, which really is the only measure necessary.

Still, it's interesting to keep up with how things are doing from a global perspective, especially when you have relatively young upstarts like Apple TV+ gaining so many accolades in an industry dominated by Netflix.
