Yamaha PDX-B11 is a go anywhere Bluetooth speaker

Many wireless speaker makers levy the dubious claim that their wares are “portable”. All too often, though, that’s just because the speaker was made small and runs on batteries. Yamaha had another approach to portability in mind when designing its PDX-B11 Bluetooth speaker. Not only is this thing compact and truly rugged – as in: it should survive the good bit of knocking around that often goes along with portability – but it even includes a handy dandy handle to make it practical to carry around.

The Yamaha PDX-B11 features AAC-compatible Bluetooth technology that makes it easy to connect to a smartphone, tablet or music player, and it can stream music wirelessly from up to 10 meters distance over the 2.4GHz wireless band. With it, you can also cut the power cord, and get your tunes for up to eight hours on six AA batteries (better factor those into the long-term cost).

It appears to be built well enough to properly kick out the jams, too. Within the unit is a single 4-inch woofer and 1 3/8-inch tweeter, which Yamaha claims work together through an advanced two-way system. While the PDX-B11 isn’t likely to replace anyone’s multi-channel surround sound systems, the key to this speaker is its practical portability, and that makes it worth a closer look.

The PDX-B11 is available to go wherever you do for about $180, plus the cost of batteries.

B&O’s latest speaker is a love letter to aluminum

Bang & Olufsen (B&O) has released a new version of its picnic basket-shaped Beosound A5 Bluetooth speaker that's wrapped entirely in aluminum. The company calls the new look Spaced Aluminium and says that you can swap the speaker's cover with two other available finishes -- Nordic Weave and Dark Oak. What's intriguing about the Spaced Aluminium's design is the way it uses an array of 3,500 individual aluminum discs to form the speaker grille.

Tivoli Audio’s Model Two Digital speaker abandons terrestrial radio

Tivoli Audio's new tabletop radio isn't a radio at all. The Model Two Digital ($449) works with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth and has a sleek new design that can be positioned horizontally or vertically. It eliminates the Model One Digital's oversized dial and screen in favor of a much simpler, single knob that does triple duty as the control for power, source selection, and volume. It also lacks an AM or FM tuner, making it the first Tivoli Audio "Model" series tabletop product to lack a terrestrial radio feature. The Model Two Digital is available for preorder starting September 19 and is expected to ship in November.

Tivoli Audio says the Model Two Digital, which is available in three color combos (walnut/gold, white/silver, and black/black), will appeal to the person that loves streaming and isn’t concerned about a traditional FM/AM radio feature because they can access their favorite terrestrial stations via apps like TuneIn. This effectively makes the Model Two Digital a wireless speaker.
