Peggy is the world’s first smart clothespin for the techie who lacks a clothes dryer

Meet peggy, the world’s smartest clothes peg
For the techie who wishes she still lived in a pre-tech era, there’s now a device made for your (very specific) demographic. Meet Peggy, the smart clothespin that will alert you when the weather is about to turn so that you can bring your laundry off the clothesline — because apparently, you’re the kind of person who owns a smartphone and a smart clothes peg, but also hangs your laundry outside on a clothesline. How cool of you.

Essentially, the peg works by way of the thermometer and a humidity sensor hidden inside the body of the device. This allows the clothespin to keep tabs on the temperature and the probability of rain, while monitoring sunlight by way of a UV sensor. Peggy aggregates all this information to determine how long it’ll take your clothes to dry outside, and sends you a notification via its companion smartphone app when your clothes are ready (or if you need to take them in early to avoid an impending storm).

But don’t worry — Peggy has more functionality than just laundry. Because this smart clothespin is also effectively a weather monitor, it’ll also tell users when to go outside and enjoy the sunshine, or when to pack an umbrella along with the picnic. And of course, it’ll also tell you exactly how long you have to be on this picnic before your clothes are dry given current conditions.

JWT Sydney group digital creative director Jay Morgan, who was involved in the creation of Peggy, calls the device “a mini weather station.” The smart clothespin isn’t actually available for sale quite yet, but if you’re in Australia and interested in helping test out the new product, you can sign up here. After all, who wouldn’t want to be part of the beta test group for the world’s very first clothes peg to join the Internet of Things?

Leviton’s new outdoor smart plug is the first with Matter support
The Leviton Outdoor Smart Plug plugged into an outlet in front of red siding.

The Leviton Decora Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug-In Switch is the latest product to offer Matter support. In fact, it’s also the first and only Matter-enabled outdoor smart plug on the market. It's a bit expensive at $55, but seeing as it’s the only member of its class right now, it might be worth the price tag.

Aside from Matter support, Leviton packed the Decora Smart Wi-Fi Outdoor Plug-In Switch with premium features. This includes extreme weather protection, an IP65 rating for waterproofing, a built-in light sensor that can automatically turn the unit on or off, and support for the Leviton smartphone app.

The catalog of smart home products that support Matter has been steadily growing over the past few months, but the latest addition to its roster might be the most enticing yet. As of April 18, you can now use the Nest Thermostat with Matter.

Only the standard Nest Thermostat (2020) supports Matter -- with both the Nest Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E left out of the fun. A Google spokesperson told Digital Trends the company is “still exploring the possibility of Matter compatibility with [the] Nest Learning Thermostat and [is] currently hoping to make it available in the coming year.”

The Nanoleaf Essential lineup installed in a home theater.

After a brief showing at CES 2023, Nanoleaf’s Matter-enabled smart lighting solutions are now available for preorder. The Essentials lineup consists of both smart light bulbs and smart lightstrips -- and with full support for Matter, they should be easy to integrate into most smart homes.

All three work with Matter over Thread, marking the first time Nanoleaf has used the interoperability standard in a product launch. Pricing for the devices starts at $20 for a single smart bulb and goes up to $50 for the Essentials Lightstrip, positioning the lineup as a reasonably affordable way to bring Matter into your smart home.
