Last month, Chevrolet announced that Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity were coming to 14 of its vehicles for the 2016 model year, but as it turns out, that was only the tip of the iceberg for General Motors.

Cadillac announced the addition of both smartphone systems in early June, and now, both Buick and GMC have declared that they will add CarPlay to select 2016 vehicles. Android Auto functionality will come later. With the announcement, General Motors is poised to become a global leader in terms of smartphone connectivity, as each of the conglomerate’s four major nameplates will offer the competing systems before the end of 2016.

CarPlay will arrive first for both Buick and GMC, with the 2016 model year Buick LaCrosse, Buick Regal, GMC Canyon, GMC Yukon, and GMC Sierra all offering Apple connectivity at launch. Android Auto will roll out on some GMC Sierra models straight away, and all Sierra, Canyon, and Yukon models will boast the feature later in the year.

As far as Buick is concerned, Android Auto capability will be offered with the brand’s IntelliLink system before the 2016 model year comes to a close.

“Buick understands the importance of connectivity integration in everyday life and this new connection technology provides drivers with a smart and simple way to have all the conveniences of their mobile devices safely at their fingertips,” said Duncan Aldred, Vice President of Buick. “It’s another step in building and implementing technology that consistently puts our customers first.”

“GMC IntelliLink is taking another step forward with this simple and intuitive functionality that makes phones and vehicles work better together,” echoed Duncan Aldred, VP of GMC Sales and Marketing. “Like other GMC features, from OnStar 4G LTE connectivity and active safety features, it’s technology designed to enhance the driving experience without intruding on it.”
