Leaked Google Pixel 4 promo video shows off a new astrophotography camera mode

The Google Pixel 4 leaks — both official and unofficial — keep pouring in as we inch closer to the expected launch period. Now there’s a video of the phone in action, showing off its impressive new astrophotography features.

The new video, which appears to be an official Pixel 4 promo clip was obtained by Spanish publication ProAndroid. While the clip doesn’t bring anything new to the table, it does substantiate a bunch of existing rumors.

For starters, the clip shows off Pixel 4’s air gestures, which will allow users to perform various tasks such as skipping music tracks by simply waving their hand over the front sensors. In addition, it hints at the public launch of Google’s “next-gen Assistant” that was first detailed at the company’s annual developer conference a few months ago.

The next major update for Google Assistant is essentially expected to get rid of all the barriers enabling you to speak to your phone without having to wait for replies or use invoke phrases. So for instance, if you receive a message with some amazing news, you would just be able to say “Reply Amazing” and the Google Assistant will take care of it.

The leaked promo also gives us a glimpse of how Google is putting Pixel 4’s dual-camera setup to use. The Pixel 4 will reportedly have a new astrophotography camera mode which will be capable of capturing stars at night and phenomenons like the Milky Way.

Last week, a different report hinted at the addition of a similar feature. On top of that, it said the Pixel 4 will have another mode for taking shots of objects in motion and 8x zoom capabilities. The latter, considering what we’ve seen on other phones, will most likely be a combination of Google’s existing Super Res Zoom feature and data from Pixel 4’s secondary telephoto lens.

While it’s always best to take such leaks with a pinch of salt, the video doesn’t feature anything outrageous and therefore, has a decent chance of being real. The promo, unfortunately, doesn’t shed light on when exactly the Pixel 4 will officially make its debut. If Google’s previous hardware events are any indication, it will likely take place in the first or second week of October.

Google’s next foldable phone is going to be a screamer, and not solely for good reasons, if the latest leaks are to be believed. SmartPrix (via OnLeaks) has shared alleged renders depicting the Google Pixel Fold 2, and it looks like a mixed bag of regressive design and positive developments.
The biggest change compared to the first-gen Google Pixel Fold is a camera bump that ditches the stretched bar look on the current-gen Pixel smartphones. Instead, we now have a rectangular design with two rows of pill-shaped black outlines, hosting three camera lenses and a bunch of other sensors.
It’s a stark departure from the mainstream Pixel camera bar, and it revives a look that was last seen on the Pixel 5 and Pixel 4 series phones. Looks aside, the side placement also means the phone will keep wobbling if you place it on a flat surface. I’m not exactly a fan of this approach, to be honest.

Another notable change is the side profile. The curved edges of the Pixel Fold have been flattened, a look that will also appear on the Google Pixel 9 series phones, according to leaked renders.
But if you look closely and ignore the ugly camera hump shape, the Pixel Fold 2 looks identical to the OnePlus Open in its leathery black trim. The side rails, those curved bezels, and the front camera placement are all identical.
Even the ridge seems to have been lifted straight from the OnePlus Open, down to its polished metal aesthetics. It’s not a bad thing, as the OnePlus Open is one of the best-built phones I’ve ever used, and the form factor is an absolute joy to handle.
The most progressive change happens once the phone is opened. The thick bezels are gone, and what we see on the Pixel Fold 2 renders are uniformly thin bezels on all sides, a trend that we first noticed on the foldable phones offered by Oppo.

There’s a new problem with the Google Pixel 8’s camera

The Google Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro were two of 2023's best Android phones, and they continue to be excellent phones in 2024. But in typical Google Pixel fashion, they also have a tendency to be pretty buggy — and that holds true four months after the phones' release.

On the r/GooglePixel subreddit, one user reported a bizarre bug with the Pixel 8's camera. When you're in your phone's camera app, tapping anywhere on the viewfinder should manually adjust its focus and exposure of what you're looking at. For example, if you tap on a dark area in your viewfinder, the exposure changes and the viewfinder gets brighter — making it easier to see your subject. If you tap on an area that looks too bright, it'll get darker. For some reason, this doesn't work as intended on the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro.

It seems that the upcoming Google Pixel 9 series of smartphones will cease to be secret way ahead of their official launch later this year. Merely a day after leak-based renders of the Pixel 9 Pro made their way online, the vanilla Pixel 9 has also been given the same unceremonious treatment.

Most recently, 91Mobiles has shared what it claims are design renders of the Google Pixel 9, which looks almost identical to its Pro variant, save for the smaller dimensions. The sides are flat and seem to unabashedly mimic the formula that Apple introduced with the iPhone 12 series and has continued with the iPhone 15.
