Newt Gingrich reviews the Apple Watch and the result is informational and charming

Newt Gingrich Reviews the Apple Watch | Mashable
It’s one thing when a 72-year-old man reviews the latest in wearable technology. It’s another thing altogether when that man is former speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives Newt Gingrich reviewing the Apple Watch.

Gingrich’s in-depth, amusing, and disarming review of Apple’s smartwatch is his debut as Mashable’s new tech reviewer. In his written review, he recounts his personal time with the Apple Watch, starting with boarding a United Airlines flight across the country. Gingrich says he was able to load his boarding pass with no issues but needed a moment to figure out that an upward swipe was necessary to display the scannable bar code.

“My time at the airport pretty much sums up how I feel about the Apple Watch overall: It’s not as seamless as you’d think, but it’s a big step toward the future.”

Gingrich goes on to describe the pros (light on the wrist, clear screen, nice-looking metal band, the calendar, Taptic Engine notifications) and cons (poor battery life, “hunting through a beehive of tiny app icons for the information you need”) of the Apple Watch.

“For form factor, I think it’s actually a very good first step, but I think of it as the beta product that will keep improving,” Gingrich says in his video review.

His conclusion: Until Apple makes all of its features as useful as the calendar, “the Apple Watch isn’t a necessity for anyone, but it will certainly be a lot of fun for a lot of people.”

Apple may have delayed a critical Apple Watch upgrade
Smart Stack on the Apple Watch Series 9.

It seems Apple’s highly anticipated display upgrades, especially for the Apple Watch, will have to wait a few more years. According to Bloomberg, Apple has shuttered in-house efforts to design and develop microLED panels that would have appeared on its smartwatches — and eventually more products down the road.

The current-gen Apple smartwatches rely on an OLED panel, but Apple has been eyeing microLED screens for the Apple Watch's future iterations. These in-house panels, which would have offered “brighter and more vibrant visuals,” were ultimately put on cold ice due to cost and complexity concerns.

Apple boss Tim Cook launches charm offensive in vital market
Tim Cook inside an Apple Store in Shanghai.

Apple chief Tim Cook is spending a few days in China, one of the tech company’s most important markets and a major product manufacturing hub.

His visit comes as iPhone sales in the country dropped 24% year-on-year in the first six weeks of 2024, according to data from Counterpoint Research. The slump was attributed to strong competition from local tech firms such as Huawei, although "abnormally high" sales in January 2023 were also a factor.

It has been over six months since the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Watch Ultra 2 launched, and they are still considered two of the best smartwatches on the market. However, there are two significant reasons why you might not want to purchase either of these models.

Those reasons are the Apple Watch Series 8 and the first-generation Apple Watch Ultra. That's right — buying a 2022 Apple Watch over the newer models might be a better choice for you.
