Rihanna to Help Nokia Promote New X6 Phone

nokia-x6What do you get when you cross one of today’s hottest R&B singers with mobile giant Nokia— the X6. Nokia teamed up with Grammy-winning recording artist Rihanna to kick off the Nokia’s new smartphone. Rihanna and her label, Island Def Jam Music Group/Universal Music Group International, are doing some media multitasking—promoting Rihanna’s new album, Rated R, and Nokia’s new phone, the X6. This dynamic pairing includes a live streaming of Rihanna’s Nov. 16th London concert onto the X6, as well as exclusive music offerings and mobile applications.

Nokia thinks its customers will be excited about its new touchscreen X6, which is officially launching on November 12th. The companysays this phone is “an entertainment device ideal for playing music and video.” Nokia boasts the X6 comes with plenty of perks: Stocked with unlimited “Comes with Music” service, the X6 also has a pay-per-track Music Store and X6 owners will receive an exclusive version of Rihanna’s Rated R featuring a bonus track, a remix and another mobile app.

“We are thrilled to be working with her [Rihanna],” said Liz Schimel, the global head of music at Nokia. “She’s excited about it personally: she’s a very innovative, cutting-edge, fresh, young, exciting global celebrity, and she has enormous pull around the world. She’s truly a global superstar.”

The Rihanna concert, taking place in London on Nov. 16, will be broadcast across Nokia mobile music, video and online at www.nokia.com/rihanna. Nokia will also be streaming the videos of concert attendees that night.

I used YouTubers’ favorite camera phone of 2023, and I wasn’t impressed
A person holding the Oppo Find X6 Pro, showing the back of the phone.

If you’ve been watching tech sites on YouTube recently or following tech pundits on Twitter, you’ve likely seen some raving about the Oppo Find X6 Pro — a smartphone several people claim to have the best camera ever. That’s a seriously bold statement, as well as a bit of a tease. Despite Oppo releasing its top-range Find series internationally before, the Find X6 Pro seems like it’s staying in China. It certainly sounds like we're really missing out.

Luckily, I’ve actually got one right here and have taken hundreds of photos with it over the past few weeks to see if the influencers are correct — and whether this really is the best camera around at the moment.

I’m sick of big, ugly phone cameras — and they’re only getting worse
The Xiaomi 12S UItra's camera module.

There’s a growing smartphone camera trend that’s going to affect overall design more than any other recent technology advancement, and if what we’re already seeing is representative of the changes to come, phones are going to get a lot more unpleasant-looking.

I’m talking about the 1-inch type camera sensor and the ridiculous camera modules currently used to contain it. Smartphone camera sensors are bigger than ever and are only going to get worse — and it's about time we say something about it.

Nokia’s new phone is so tough, you can almost pressure wash it
Nokia XR21 in green, in water.

The Nokia name has long been associated with tough phones, but HMD Global’s new Nokia XR21 goes a step beyond what we’re used to seeing. It has an IP68 water and dust resistance rating, which joins a MIL-STD-810H toughness rating, but it also adds IP69K to the list. This unusual rating, which we can’t recall seeing on another phone, means the phone can resist very high-pressure jets of water, dust, or steam coming at any angle.

How much pressure are we talking? The company says you can hit it with a 100-bar pressure stream of water at up to 80 degrees centigrade, and it’ll carry on working. To put that into context, most home pressure washers operate at around 100 bar, so you should be able to give it a very thorough cleaning under a tap without concern.
