Waze will put drivers at ease by letting them avoid difficult intersections

As a driver who often frequents the city, I know too well the annoyances of arriving at a busy intersection with no traffic light, particularly when you need to get all the way across multiple lanes of oncoming traffic. Waze, the Tel Aviv-based navigation app owned by Google, wants to relieve some of that pain with a new “difficult intersections” feature.

Toggled on by default, the new feature lets you bypass any annoying — and possibly dangerous — intersections you might come across. However, driving through those intersections is usually the quickest way to get to a certain destination in the city, so by Waze taking you down an alternative route, it might take more time to get to where you want to go.

According to the blog post making the announcement, the difficult intersections feature was designed to balance an efficient estimated time of arrival with avoiding those intersections. As such, if the alternative route takes longer, Waze will guide you through the difficult intersection. If you find the feature to be annoying and are just fine with any intersection, you can turn it off.

Even though the difficult intersections feature would come in handy in cities like New York, Chicago, and Miami, the feature is only available in Los Angeles for the time being. According to Waze, the feature will expand to New Orleans, with additional locations added if Waze users identify its need wherever they live.

California seems to be the place to be for Waze’s newest features, as the company unveiled a carpooling program for San Francisco workers to use. Even though they would undoubtedly find Waze’s difficult intersections feature useful in a city like San Francisco, there are very specific criteria they would need to meet.

Arc Search, one of my favorite iPhone apps, is now on Android
Screenshots of the Arc Search app on Android.

Earlier this year, Arc Search became one of my favorite iPhone apps in recent memory. It's a browser app that's wicked fast, has a very clean interface, and has an unbelievably good AI feature. Today, Arc Search's developers (The Browser Company) have announced that the app is finally coming to Android.

Starting tomorrow, October 4, you can head to the Google Play Store and download Arc Search on any Android device running Android 13 or later. The app is still in open beta, and not every feature from the iOS app is currently available. Regardless, it's still exciting to see one of this year's best iPhone apps officially land on Android.

Apple has introduced several changes with iOS 18 this year, and many more are expected to come with iOS 18.1 and future versions in the upcoming weeks. These changes mainly involve the visual appearance of iOS, such as a revamped Control Center and the forthcoming debut of Apple Intelligence.
