‘Titanic’ star Kate Winslet will reunite with James Cameron for ‘Avatar 2’

It’s been almost a decade since James Cameron’s Avatar hit theaters, but filming is currently underway on Avatar 2, the long-awaited sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide. The cast of the film is also filling out, with Academy Award winner Kate Winslet recently joining the project in a starring role.

Winslet will play a character named Ronal for the film, but little is known about her role other than the character’s name. However, the film will reunite Winslet with Cameron for the first time since the actress starred in 1997’s Titanic.

“Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career,” Cameron told Deadline. “I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life.”

Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment 20th Century Fox announced in late September that principle photography and motion-capture filming had kicked off on the first of four sequels the director has planned. All four sequels are expected to be filmed back-to-back, then released across a six-year span, from 2020 to 2025.

The majority of the 2009 film’s cast members are expected to return for the sequels, with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, and Sigourney Weaver all reprising their roles. Lang was confirmed to return as Colonel Miles Quaritch, with Cameron indicating that he will be the villain of all four sequels.

Newcomers to the franchise include Sunshine and The Dark Horse actor Cliff Curtis and Game of Thrones actress Oona Chaplin.

The first Avatar was released December 18, 2009, and went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, with more than $2.7 billion in ticket sales. The film was also the highest-grossing film of all time in U.S. theaters until Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens surpassed it with $936 million in domestic box-office earnings. (Avatar earned $760 million domestically.)

Avatar 2 is currently scheduled to hit theaters exactly 11 years after the first film, with a premiere date of December 18, 2020. A third film is scheduled to premiere December 17, 2021, followed by a fourth film on December 20, 2024, and a fifth film on December 19, 2025. In July 2017, Weaver indicated that extending the franchise to five films is more than just a cash grab.

“There’s a very good reason why it turned out to be four sequels,” she promised. “Having read all four of them, I think they’re absolutely extraordinary and worth the wait.”

All five of the Avatar films will be produced by Cameron and his producing partner Jon Landau through the pair’s Lightstorm Entertainment, with scripts penned by Cameron, writing partners Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.

Update: We’ve added the news that Kate Winslet has joined the film’s cast.

Where to watch Titanic
Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet as Jack and Rose posing on the ship's bow in Titanic.

As demonstrated by the currently unfolding story about the missing OceanGate submarine, the allure of the Titanic remains strong well over a century after the ship sank beneath the waves in 1912. The ongoing fascination with the ship and its fate reached a crescendo in 1997 when director James Cameron unleashed Titanic, which at the time was the most expensive movie ever made. Stories about Titanic going wildly over budget filled the Hollywood trades of the era, and they hung over the film prior to its release. Critics and industry observers alike believed that the film would be a box-office disaster. Instead, Titanic became the highest-grossing movie of all time, until it lost that honor in 2010 when Cameron's next movie, Avatar, surpassed it.

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were not unknowns when they were cast in the leading roles of Titanic, but this film catapulted them to even greater stardom thanks to their performances as star-crossed lovers Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater. Their doomed romance is at the heart of the movie. Cameron wisely surrounded DiCaprio and Winslet with a very impressive supporting cast, including Billy Zane, Kathy Bates, Frances Fisher, Bernard Hill, Jonathan Hyde, Danny Nucci, David Warner, and Bill Paxton. Titanic also weaves its original story in and out of the historical events to great effect.

Why James Cameron’s proposed Terminator reboot shouldn’t happen
A terminator in Terminator 2: Judgment Day."

Director James Cameron recently proposed his plan to reboot the Terminator franchise ... again. In an interview on the podcast "SmartLess," Cameron said: "If I were to do another Terminator film and maybe try to launch that franchise again, which is in discussion, but nothing has been decided, I would make it much more about the AI side of it than bad robots gone crazy."

While this sounds like an interesting idea, the Terminator franchise has been rebooted multiple times before. Even though this proposed sequel could rectify the failures of its many previous movies, there are plenty of reasons why it's high time to put the iconic sci-fi franchise to rest.
