‘Titanic’ star Kate Winslet will reunite with James Cameron for ‘Avatar 2’

It’s been almost a decade since James Cameron’s Avatar hit theaters, but filming is currently underway on Avatar 2, the long-awaited sequel to the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide. The cast of the film is also filling out, with Academy Award winner Kate Winslet recently joining the project in a starring role.

Winslet will play a character named Ronal for the film, but little is known about her role other than the character’s name. However, the film will reunite Winslet with Cameron for the first time since the actress starred in 1997’s Titanic.

“Kate and I have been looking for something to do together for 20 years, since our collaboration on Titanic, which was one of the most rewarding of my career,” Cameron told Deadline. “I can’t wait to see her bring the character of Ronal to life.”

Cameron’s Lightstorm Entertainment 20th Century Fox announced in late September that principle photography and motion-capture filming had kicked off on the first of four sequels the director has planned. All four sequels are expected to be filmed back-to-back, then released across a six-year span, from 2020 to 2025.

The majority of the 2009 film’s cast members are expected to return for the sequels, with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Joel David Moore, Stephen Lang, Matt Gerald, and Sigourney Weaver all reprising their roles. Lang was confirmed to return as Colonel Miles Quaritch, with Cameron indicating that he will be the villain of all four sequels.

Newcomers to the franchise include Sunshine and The Dark Horse actor Cliff Curtis and Game of Thrones actress Oona Chaplin.

The first Avatar was released December 18, 2009, and went on to become the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, with more than $2.7 billion in ticket sales. The film was also the highest-grossing film of all time in U.S. theaters until Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens surpassed it with $936 million in domestic box-office earnings. (Avatar earned $760 million domestically.)

Avatar 2 is currently scheduled to hit theaters exactly 11 years after the first film, with a premiere date of December 18, 2020. A third film is scheduled to premiere December 17, 2021, followed by a fourth film on December 20, 2024, and a fifth film on December 19, 2025. In July 2017, Weaver indicated that extending the franchise to five films is more than just a cash grab.

“There’s a very good reason why it turned out to be four sequels,” she promised. “Having read all four of them, I think they’re absolutely extraordinary and worth the wait.”

All five of the Avatar films will be produced by Cameron and his producing partner Jon Landau through the pair’s Lightstorm Entertainment, with scripts penned by Cameron, writing partners Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, Josh Friedman, and Shane Salerno.

Update: We’ve added the news that Kate Winslet has joined the film’s cast.

James Cameron is thinking about rebooting the Terminator franchise … again
new Terminator trilogy James Cameron

Despite presumably being in the production process for an Avatar sequel (of which we should expect four, sometime in the next century or so), James Cameron has apparently expressed interest in returning to the Terminator franchise.

With the 3D theatrical re-release of Terminator 2: Judgment Day set for August 25, Cameron revealed in an interview with News.com.au that he hopes to reimagine the franchise with (get this) a "three-film arc." That is right -- he doesn't just want a regular old reboot; he wants to make a full-on trilogy.

For James Cameron, exploring ‘The ‘World of Avatar’ was an actual dream come true
james cameron partners with disney imagineers to bring avatar life pandora park 2

After making over three billion at the box office, James Cameron’s Oscar-winning Avatar created a global fan base. One fan had slightly more pull than most.
When Bob Iger calls, you answer. Iger is chairman and CEO of The Walt Disney Company, and when he called Cameron to ask if he’d be interested in bringing Pandora to life at Disney’s Animal Kingdom theme park in Orlando, FL, Cameron did just that. After several more conversations, including one with Walt Disney Imagineering, the director decided to partner with Disney to make Pandora – a world he first imagined when he was 19 years old – a reality.

After six years of development, Pandora: The World of Avatar has officially opened as a new 12-acre section inside Disney’s Animal Kingdom, part of the Walt Disney World Resort. The Valley of Mo’ara is home to two new rides, a quick-service restaurant called the Satu’li Canteen, and a bar called the Pongu Pongu Lounge (set behind an old RDA amp suit) adjacent to the Windtraders gift shop. But the majority of the new area is dedicated to walkways, bridges, and paths through lush alien foliage blended with living Earth plants, cascading waterfalls, and mountains that seem to float in the air.
