Does Blue Beetle have a post-credits scene?

Blue Beetle unleashes his wings in a still from Blue Beetle.

Since Iron Man arrived in 2008, superhero movies have usually featured a mid-credits scene, a post-credits scene, or both. It’s become a tradition for superhero flicks, although there are still a few films that try to ignore that expectation. Without giving too much away, Blue Beetle does embrace that superhero tradition. And the scene in question sets up a potential sequel that could completely upend the life of the new Blue Beetle, Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña), as well as the film’s secondary protagonist, Jenny Kord  (Bruna Marquezine).

So the short answer is “yes,” you should stick around when the credits roll on Blue Beetle. But you may not want to stay all the way to the very end of the credits, and we can explain why.

Warning: There are full spoilers ahead for Blue Beetle!

Does Blue Beetle have a post-credits scene?

Yes, it has two, actually. But only the mid-credits scene is really important. Earlier in the movie, Jenny takes Jaime to the lair of her missing and presumed dead father, Ted Kord. Jenny also reveals to Jaime and his uncle, Rudy (George Lopez), that Ted was the second Blue Beetle. The original Blue Beetle, Dan Garrett (whose costume is in the middle of the pic above), was the first man on Earth who discovered the alien Scarab and bonded with it. Ted was never chosen to wield the Scarab, but he wasn’t deterred from becoming a hero. Instead, Ted used his scientific genius to make himself all of the gadgets that he needed as the next Blue Beetle.

The most obvious answer for Ted’s absence throughout the film is that he must have been killed by one of his enemies, or more likely by his sister, Victoria Kord. But the mid-credits scene reveals that Ted is alive, and he is now able to contact his lair because Jaime, Rudy, and Jenny turned on his old computers. Ted even specifically asks that Jenny be told that he is still living and says he is eager to reunite with her. Beyond that, Ted’s fate is a mystery.

What happens in Blue Beetle’s final post-credits scene?

Spider-Man: Homecoming (Post-credit Scene)- Captain America's Speech [HD]

Do you remember the post-credits scene above from Spider-Man: Homecoming? Chris Evans’ Captain America lectured the audience about patience and why some things aren’t worth waiting for. That’s basically the last post-credits scene in Blue Beetle as well. Rather than deal with anything important in the story itself, the scene shows the stop-motion animation glimpsed earlier in the film of the Hispanic superhero El Chapulín Colorado, aka The Red Grasshopper. The voice of George Lopez’s Rudy can be heard reacting positively to the clip, but it doesn’t go any further than that.

Blue Beetle is now playing in theaters.

Is Blue Beetle streaming?
Xolo Maridueña as Blue Beetle.

This week, Jaime Reyes joins Miles Morales as one of the few superheroes created in this century to get their own feature film on the big screen. Blue Beetle also has the distinction of being the first Latino DC hero to hold down his own film, a milestone that Marvel Studios has yet to match. Additionally, Blue Beetle features rising star Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) in the leading role as Jaime, and this movie could go a long way toward making Maridueña into a box office draw.

Jaime is a college graduate who unwittingly receives one of the most powerful weapons in the universe: a sentient alien Scarab (voiced by Becky G) that has its own mind, and the ability to bond with its host. The Scarab also bestows incredible powers including an exoskeleton and weapons that can be shaped and created from the imagination of the user. If Jaime and the Scarab can get on the same page then they could become a force for good. But first, they have to elude Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon), a malevolent businesswoman who wants the Scarab's power for herself.

Xolo Maridueña catches a bus in Blue Beetle.

The bombastic feature films offered up by the DCEU have generated mixed results both critically and fiscally. Recently, films based on the comic book giant's properties haven't fared so well. Black Adam, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and The Flash, which even had the added draw of Michael Keaton returning to the bat cowl, have all failed to reel in the masses and live up to the studio's expectations. As such, the trend doesn't bode well for young Jaime Reyes portrayed by Xolo Maridueña (Cobra Kai) as he dons the alien-originated Blue Beetle suit to save the day.

In the pages of DC's colorful comics, Blue Beetle has an incredibly vast history. While he isn't exactly a mainstream hero yet, at least not one that can stand against the likes of Wonder Woman, Superman, or Batman, that doesn't mean he along with other more obscure DC characters can't have some time in the spotlight. So, that begs the question: what other heroes on Blue Beetle's level deserve a cinematic adventure of their own?

Blue Beetle’s ending, explained
The official poster for Blue Beetle with portraits of the cast.

2023 is the year that Warner Bros. scheduled four different DC movies for theatrical release. So far, it's been a pretty rough year with Shazam! Fury of the Gods and The Flash both failing to live up to their respective box office expectations. Until Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom arrives in December, Blue Beetle is the best chance for DC to right its ship. But it's far too soon to say how casual fans will respond to this movie.

Cobra Kai's Xolo Maridueña stars in the film as Jaime Reyes, the young man who becomes Blue Beetle after a sentient alien Scarab known as Khaji-Da (Becky G) bonds with his body. Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of the previous Blue Beetle, Ted Kord, gave Jaime the Scarab to keep it away from her corrupt aunt, Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon), and her right-hand man, Ignacio Carapax (Raoul Max Trujillo).
