Sony Debuts Five Smart Cyber-shot Cameras

Sony Debuts Five Smart Cyber-shot Cameras

Sony Electronics has announced five new Cyber-shot digital cameras—the DSC-T900, DSC-T90, DSC-W290, DSC-W230, and DSC-H20—four of which feature an intelligent auto mode that "thinks" for photographers, adjusting setting automatically to capture skin tones, reduce blur, and make sure subjects have their eyes open—even in situations where lighting conditions make taking a perfect picture difficult.

"This camera provides a seamless experience," said Sony senior product manager Karim Noblecilla, in a statement. "You can go from a walk in the park to taking pictures of a flower and then back to beautiful landscapes or indoor birthday parties, and the camera will know what to do to get the best shot."

The technology combines intelligent scene recognition (that can detect and switch between five to eight basic scene types in as little as a 30th of a second) with face detection that can register up to eight faces in a single shot. Two of the models also feature selected-face memory, enabling photographers to assign priority to a selected subject’s face. The cameras can also be configured to take two quick snapshots in low light situations using two alternative settings, so users are more likely to get a good shot even in bad light.

The T900 features a 3.5-inch display, 12.1 megapixel resolution, stereo microphone, and a 4× optical zoom; the T90 is similar but with a 3-inch LCD display. The W230 also features a 12.1 megapixel resolution. 4× optical zoom, and 3-inch LCD display, while the W290 adds a 5× optical zoom. The H20 offers a 10.1 megapixel resolution, a 10× optical zoom, and a 3-inch LCD. All these cameras except the W230 can also capture full-screen 720p MPEG-4 video at 30 frames per second.

All five cameras will be available for pre-order beginning in March, with availability coming in April. The T900 will carry a suggested price of $380 and be available in red, bronze, silver, and black; the T90 will be available in silver, black, pink, and brown for about $300. The W290 will go for about $250 in blue, bronze, silver, and black, while the W230 will be priced at about $200 in blue, red, silver, and black. Finally, the H20 will only come in black with a $280 estimated price tag.

This Polaroid-style Fujifilm instant camera is $49 for Cyber Monday
Light Blue Fujifilm INSTAX Mini 7+ Exclusive Blister Bundle with Bonus Pack of Film

Many folks might write off instant cameras, especially with everybody having a high-end portable camera in their pocket that primarily serves as their phone. For those in the know, though, instant cameras provide an interesting retrospective and stylistic choice that a filter can't easily recreate. Take the Fujifilm Instax Mini 7+, for example. It's small, cute, and relatively inexpensive, yet gives you the opportunity to play with instant photos. You can even grab it for cheaper than usual from Walmart, as it's just $49 rather than the $67 it normally goes for. That's a savings of $18.

Why you should buy the Fujifilm Instax Mini 7+
If you read our instant-print face-off -- Polaroid OneStep Flash vs. Fujifilm Instax Mini 7S -- you'll know that the Mini 7S is a great instant camera to grab. The Instax Mini 7+ is very similar to the 7S, but boasts a couple of quality-of-life improvements. For example, you get a two-component retractable lens that makes storage a bit easier, as well as an f-stop of 60 mm. There's also a built-in lens cover to protect it when it's in your bag or pocket, which helps make it even more portable. You also have relatively simple exposure adjustments you can make -- nothing too fancy but enough to give you some wiggle room.

Sony A7 III mirorless camera is $300 off for Black Friday
Sony Alpha a7 III Mirrorless front view.

There are a lot of great Best Buy Black Friday deals going on right now, and whether you're looking for TVs, laptops, or even headphones, there's a little something for everybody. Of course, many folks may not realize that Best Buy has some fantastic deals on high-end photography gear, such as this Sony Alpha a7 III mirrorless camera. While it usually goes for a whopping $2,200, Best Buy had brought it down to $1,900, and while that relatively doesn't seem like much, you could always spend the $300 savings on a new lens.

Why you should buy the Sony Alpha a7 III
The Sony Alpha a7 III is a camera with so much tech that it might as well be three different cameras. It has excellent dynamic range, low-light performance, and high-speed performance, and the full-frame sensors make the images look absolutely stunning. Interestingly, the a7 III manages to do an excellent job at both low and high ISOs, the latter of which can go as high as 51,200 non-boosted, which, granted, adds a lot of noise, but noise reduction helps with that. As for the video, well, sadly, it's not as impressive, at least in terms of advancements in image quality, and while it can do 8-bit 4K at 30 frames per second, it's no longer ahead of the pack in that regard, like the Panasonic Lumix GH5 is with its 400Mbps 10-bit codec and 60-fps 4K.

How to choose a camera on Cyber Monday
It's best to start by identifying the features you must have and those that would be nice but are not essential. The retailers with cameras on sale today offer many different digital cameras from Canon, making it useful to look at our best Canon cameras of 2020 guide to determine the significant features of different models. Canon models differ in their image sensors, autofocus viewfinder systems' speed, and points of reference, as well as their frame per second (fps) continuous shooting capabilities. You'll also want to check their ability regarding 4K output. The entry-level Canon EOS Rebel T7i, for example, doesn't support 4K video, but it has a fast, 45-point autofocus viewfinder, great battery life, and dual-pixel autofocus that works well for video. More experienced photographers who seek the highest-quality still image may prefer the Canon EOS 5D Mark IV, which bumps up the autofocus system to 61 points. Considering a mirrorless camera instead of a DLSR? Check out the Canon EOS M5 entry-level model or the Canon EOS R designed for enthusiasts and professionals. You'll also find excellent deals on Nikon cameras. Nikons frequently appear on lists of the best DSLR cameras. The Nikon Z 5 entry-level body is a popular choice of serious photographers.
