Aside from deciding the champion of pigskin, the Super Bowl has long been the time when companies roll out their most high-budget, titillating or controversial commercials. But last night, collaborative coupon-savings company Groupon apparently took a step too far.
In case you missed last night’s big game, here’s what happened: Groupon’s ad, for which the two-year-old company paid $3 million to air, opens with shots of the beautiful landscape of Tibet — a county that has suffered under the heavy hand of communist China since 1951.
“The Tibetan people are in trouble,” says actor Timothy Hutton in a voiceover. “Their very culture is in jeopardy.”
And then it all goes to hell.
“But they still whip up an amazing fish curry!” says Hutton, now sitting comfortably in a restaurant.
From here, he segues into why Groupon is so great: Members of Groupon saved a life-changing $15 on dinner at Himalayan restaurant in Chicago! Yes, 15 whole dollars! Hurray!
Watch the ad:
By using the troubles of the Tibetan people to advertise its services, Groupon managed to infuriate, well, everyone. Seconds after the spot aired, Twitter erupted with posts of outrage about the commercial. And the hate-fest has only increased this morning, with outlets like Forbes reporting that both Chinese and Tibetan activists were outraged by the ad. (The Chinese didn’t like the fact that the commercial declared the Tibetan people “in trouble” — a fact they vehemently dispute; and, obviously, Tibetans don’t like it because their plight has been cheapened by becoming the set up for a $15 coupon.)
Despite all the righteous indignation, however, Groupon has defended (or at least explained) the commercial on the company blog:
The gist of the concept is this: When groups of people act together to do something, it’s usually to help a cause. With Groupon, people act together to help themselves by getting great deals. So what if we did a parody of a celebrity-narrated, PSA-style commercial that you think is about some noble cause (such as “Save the Whales”), but then it’s revealed to actually be a passionate call to action to help yourself (as in “Save the Money”)?
Since we grew out of a collective action and philanthropy site (ThePoint.com) and ended up selling coupons, we loved the idea of poking fun at ourselves by talking about discounts as a noble cause. So we bought the spots, hired mockumentary expert Christopher Guest to direct them, enlisted some celebrity faux-philanthropists, and plopped down three Groupon ads before, during, and after the biggest American football game in the world.
Additionally, Groupon has set up a website, SaveTheMoney.org, where people can see additional ads, and donate money to four “featured charities” — Greenpeace, Rainforest Action Network, buildOn, and the Tibet Fund. Groupon says it will match any donations contributed through their site up to $100,000.
We know it’s hard enough to get your idea across to millions of people in only 30 seconds. But perhaps Groupon would have been wise to include some of these facts in the ad, too. Just an idea…
no, not "everyone" was offended. only snobby douchebags that have no sense of humor were offended.
I think it backfired on them. It probably wasn't meant to cause quite a stir, but you also have to figure when you advertise on the SB that there will be critics. I know a lot of people are boycotting Groupon and looking for alternative sources for their social coupons. My favorite is http://www.imin.com – they are a great company with style and cares. Funny vids, too!
Let's band together and boycott the Groupon website!

Groupon just lowered their sales value by about $3 billion.
Wasn't it obvious not to compare a struggling culture with saving money, weird!
Lost alot of customers. Competition thanks the dummy who greenlit that one :)
I couldn’t stop laughing, myself. Awesome ad.
Remember get mad at groupon, because China is not responsible for the tyrrany in Tibet, not anyone else except americans. Of course when the rest of the world has trouble who do they call?? Not the ghostbusters, Y'all gatta call big daddy to fix your problems, WW1 and WW2, not to mention, Kuwait, Jordan, Israel, Somolia, Russia(who pretty much tortured anyone from the arab nations they posessed), but not China. China could nuke the world and America would be at fault. Mentally inept liberals.
I do like Tibetian noodles with lots of hot pepper.
I couldn’t stop laughing, myself. Awesome ad.
Offensive or not, this commercial worked. Now people are talking about Groupon. This will drive people to the site.
It wasn’t offensive, jeez – lighten up Francis! It was, however, stupid.
I thought it was a great commercial.. Peoples panties are wound way too tight
Video Breakdown:
Man praises beauty of Tibet, and informs us of the oppression from China. Groupon continues to state how their heritage could be in jeopardy. Using bulk purchasing techniques, we can help support Tibetan business, culture and get items cheaper. What is hard to understand, unless you are crazy and see the ink stain as blood rather than a butterfly.
We buy from Tibetan companies to support Tibetan business. How stupid do you have to be to confuse feces with an apple(Did you have to bite it first??)
As someone who has worked in marketing for a long time I can tell you this ad is a BAD idea, whether you "like" it or not. Why? (1) It associates the Brand with negative emotion (disaster, etc.) and (2) makes it seem as if Groupon thinks that the serious Tibetan issues are some sort of joke. While this may raise awareness of Groupon, it will not do it in a productive way. Avoiding this sort of thing is second nature for an experienced marketing person so I expect that Groupon does not have such a person on board and that either they made the ad themselves (almost always a bad idea) or they have an inexperienced ad agency. It's a shame, given the service is so good…
Really, SR People (Shocked and Outraged People), lighten up. Seems everything offends you anymore. Interesting, though – what this did accomplish is that it exposed Groupon for what it apparently really is: an elitist, hypocritical, lock-jawed, snob of a left-wing company. Timothy Hutton? Rainforest Action Network? GREENPEACE? Geesh. Now I know what website NOT to patronize!
Losen up. It's just a joke. That's the problem with people. Tibeth is struggling as it is. You don't have remind these people haw bad they have it. Laugh a little. There is nothing wrong with that, as long as its intended to be a joke. And it has
Haiti too. Lets drop crumbs off our hamburger onto the beggars at our feet and laugh at how they fight over them with your logic…
If we are truly sympathetic for others' (Tibetan, Chinese or our own close neighbors') suffering, should not we study their culture/history a little bit more, especially for the preparation of a short and expensive commercial? For those who care, this site, [http://factsanddetails.com/china.php?itemid=212&catid=6&subcatid=35] explains "Why Tibetans Don't Eat Fish……"
Fact is it worked. We are talking about it.
I agree.. a BAD advertisement – tasteless.
Boycot groupon they are greedy people claiming to save you money at the expense of small business owners, do you see a major chain restaurant? Nope, just the little people being conned into letting them sell a coupon when the restaurant gets nothing in return. They are vultures.
Thats far from true..groupon has helped many small businesses get their name out there and see increased profits..the company may split profit with groupon initially..but many customers return and small businesses benefit from their groupon advertisement
It is just different. Who cares get over it . Not your company or your money
Remember when people didn't take everything so seriously? Me too. I miss those days. I would never use a site like groupon.com but after articles like this I have a sudden desire to give them my business.
Really, people!? Quit taking yourselves so seriously–life's too short. Besides, Groupon is an AWESOME site!
What's next? Child pornagraphy or the under age sex slave trade, or why not the mentaly disabled? Some things are just not funny. I hope you site fails. Has Timothy Huttons career so bad that this is the only job he could get? It's just sad
I bet you supported Big Ben too. He proves that rape is acceptable if you have the money, just like Michael Jackson. And you will support him after the coutless girls who didn't stand up and shun the one that did, turn around and discombobulate a commerical because it's that time of month.
Oh get over yourselves. That is why people hate americans? Really? I thought it was because we as americans are the wealthiest nation ever in history and continue to this day, or is it because we can walk into any country at breakfast and take it over by lunch while making dinner reservations. If this is your stage to show your discust with the "American" way of life you are a mental midget. As far as the commercial goes? Who really cares and if I could save 15 dollars on anything I would go to groupon and print it out and use it. What a wonderful country for allowing us as a people to speak freely without having our head cut off.
Vietnam? FAIL, Afghanistan? FAIL, America didnt make those dinner dates and China's eating your lunch at the moment.
average ad, whats shocking is Hutton's Plastic surgery!
Only in America would an idiot spend $3 million on that ad and have a company valued at $6 Billion, I can hear the sound of the bubble bursting. 'people speak freely without having our heads cut off' that's why the founder of Wikkileaks fears execution if deported to America, for running a website! ''if I could save 15 dollars on anything' who cares if i bomb babies as long as i can fuel my car. Keep living the dream!
I thought it was offensive and so did everyone watching with me. If the purpose of advertising is to get me to try or support a product or service, groupon spent $3mil to do the opposite
I'm no fan of Red China, but all the sorrow for Tibet and longing to restore it to its previous theocracy (the only political system worse than communism) under a crackpot leader who claims to know which hand and in what way it is or is not sinful to jerk off is misguided. I'm sure the Dalai Lama is as humble as anyone who claims to be a living god can be, but a return of Tibet to the possession of a gaggle of priests is no step forward.
It was disgusting. Also the one later with Elizabeth Hurley was disgusting. Only the ignorant would find that funny. It is like Kenneth Cole making fun of Egypt. To exploit such serious situations as a joke shows a lack of human compasion. This is why people hate Americans. You are part of the problem this world is in, not the solution!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I will never use this site !!!!!
People hate America because they have all the money in the world- literally- enough money to feed and clothe every hungry person in the world, enough influence to end the suffering of the Tibetan people, and enough resources to stop the desecration of the rainforests in Brazil, and yet they waste it all on barbaric pageants like the Superbowl, and spending money on things they don't need… but worst of all, when an Ad like Groupon's comes out, they act completely sanctimonious and offended. Why? Because a site is pointing out to you exactly how you WASTE your time and money on trivial matters while the world goes to hell in a hand basket? Who among the "offended" is so outrages that they're going to take the money they would have spent on coupons, and donate it directly to Free Tibet or Greenpeace? Exactly? You're hypocrites of the highest order, and that's why the rest of the world hates America.
I thought it was hilariouis myself. In fact I was tick off when the commercial first started until I realized it was a joke.
really? Everyone? Or just your audience. I thought it was hilarious…its a commercial don't look too much into it
that wasnt smart at all
