The most high-tech room in your house may soon be your bathroom. At least, if you consider bringing a dentist into your home by way of a true 21st-century toothbrush. Thanks to the latest new smart toothbrush from Philips Sonicare, which bears the rather unwieldy name of the Philips Sonicare FlexCare Platinum Connected, you’ll have unprecedented insights as to just how you’re brushing your teeth, and whether you’re brushing certain parts of your mouth too much or too little. So if you’re tired of hearing your dentist tell you about the same problem spots over and over again, you may be able to beat her to the punch with this Bluetooth connected toothbrush.

The connectivity of this particular toothbrush is key, as it uses its myriad sensors in the handle to track your brushing habits. This data is then transmitted via Bluetooth to an app (available for both iOS and Android), where you’ll be shown a 3D map of the insides of your mouth. From there, you’ll be able to determine which teeth you’ve taken care of, and which you’ve been neglecting. And better still, you’ll see how much pressure you’re applying, and if it’s too heavy or too light. And of course, because both the app and the toothbrush itself feature a timer, you’ll know when you’ve hit the recommended two-minute mark.

“With FlexCare Platinum, even the deepest clean is gentle enough to protect your teeth and gums,” Philips says. “Thanks to the AdaptiveClean brush head and intuitive pressure sensor you can get maximum plaque removal and a gentle experience however you brush.” Claiming 10 times more plaque removal and healthier gums when compared to results of a manual toothbrush, the new smart brush also boasts three modes and three intensities, two different brushheads, and a UV brush head sanitizer.

So if you’re a true denizen of the 21st century, you might as well bring your mouth into the future as well.

Oral-B adds new smart toothbrushes to product lineup, including iO10
Oral B IO5

It’s easy to agree no one likes going to the dentist, right? After all, between the scraping, whining drills, and all that grinding, it’s rarely a relaxing experience. Even so, dentists have been telling us all for years that those visits will be less stressful if we take better care of our teeth, and today’s smart toothbrushes and gadgets aim to make it easier than ever. Oral B is one of the biggest names in toothbrushing technology, and as part of CES 2022 it announced new brushes and a new gadget that’s akin to having a dentist pop a connected periscope into your mouth.

Oral B launched the new Oral B iO10, as well as two more wallet-friendly brushes: The iO4 and iO5.

A display of LED light strips.

Whether you're an up-and-coming or established photographer shooting stills in a studio space, or the celebrated host of a popular YouTube channel (like and subscribe), there's one thing that your camera of choice requires above all else, and that's a suitable lighting setup for whatever content you and your lens may be producing.

When it comes to snapping pictures or taking video in a dedicated workspace, there are all kinds of lighting equipment you can get your hands on to properly illuminate your final product, but what about smart lighting? Sure, smart lights are a bit more common for residential applications, but if you're paying for a web connection for your studio-lair, there's plenty you can do to enliven your next session.

Outdoor smart lights are best for expressing your patriotism this 4th of July
4th of July lighting as brought to us by Philips Hue.

Independence Day is that time of year when friends and family can gather for a shared outdoor experience that combines good eats, plenty of beverages, and neighborhood-wide explosions -- which often begin in the weeks before the holiday and carry through a majority of the summer. We're talking, of course, about good-old bombastic fireworks.

A staple of every 4th of July extravaganza both big and small, you'll be hard-pressed to not find elaborate displays of these colorful pyrotechnics at your local stores, dedicated fireworks shops, or even under pop-up tents on the side of the interstate (where one should purchase with caution). Fireworks are an iconic way to express your Independence Day cheer, but they're not exactly quiet or completely safe. In the dog days of 2020, illegal firework activity was more commonplace than ever, with many parts of the country dealing with decibel disturbances long into the predawn hours. Then there are the numerous injuries and fatalities that are directly attributed to fireworks use, even under the safest conditions.
