A look back on the quick rise of social networking.
For something that has become so crucial to our existence, social media hasn’t been around that long. Within the last few years, Internet applications have transformed from simple utilitarian tools to creative outlets for personal expression and innovation. And these platforms are very, very important to us: You can’t talk about social networking without thinking of Facebook addiction or Craigslist horror stories. Blogs that got people fired or TwitPics that were mistakenly sent have become common news fodder.
But it’s not all bad, far from it. Social Internet platforms have also connected the globe in a way that wasn’t previously possible, making the world a little smaller and its inhabitants a little closer. It’s been cause and core to revolutions, a valuable tool for fighting oppression or rallying support. All that, and it’s still really, really new.
