Redbox Makes a New One-day Rental Record

redbox-dvdThe ever-popular Redbox DVD rental vendor says it broke its one-day vending record this New Year’s Eve. On December 31, 2009, more than 2 million DVDs were checked out by U.S. customers—which greatly surpassed the company’s previous one-day sale record by at least 170,000. Apparently the most popular titles for that record breaking New Year’s Eve were Paranormal Activity, Julie & Julia, G Force and District 9.

“With many Americans celebrating New Year’s Eve at home and many more resolving to save money in 2010, Redbox proved a great way to do both,” said Gary Cohen, Redbox’s senior vice president for marketing and customer experience. “Renting a record-breaking 2 million DVDs in a single night, Redbox looks forward to continuing to provide consumers with incredible value and convenience in the New Year.”

Redbox says it has more than 19,000 fully-automated rental locations in the United States which dispensed more than 350 million total rentals during 2009. Looks like Redbox hasn’t felt the burn of 2009 as bad as other DVD rental companies, like Blockbuster and Hollywood Video.
