The best gaming monitors for the PS4 in 2021

Sure, you can always hook up your PS4 (or PS5) to a handy nearby TV, but a dedicated gaming monitor comes with extra advantages: It’s easier to set up in a zone built specifically for gaming, and you can make sure that specific features like a certain resolution, refresh rate, or HDR format is supported to get the most out of your new games. They’re also more likely to come with gaming modes, blue light filters, and other handy extras.

If that sounds like a good plan to you, you’ll love the monitors we vetted as the best for pairing up with your PS4. Take a look! You may also be interested in checking out some perfect PS4 headsets as well as our guide to the top gaming monitors.

Quick note: Yes, the PS4 uses an AMD GPU. However, that doesn’t mean it works best with FreeSync monitors. The PS4 isn’t designed to take advantage of syncing technologies, so it can’t communicate with a monitor in the right ways for FreeSync to make a difference. Don’t make syncing a dealbreaker here.

LG UltraGear 27GN750-B

LG’s well-rounded UltraGear monitor is not only a game-friendly option, it’s one of the best general gaming monitors around, which makes it an ideal choice if you’re looking for a PlayStation setup. The 27-inch full HD IPS monitor sports a 1-millisecond response time with a 240Hz refresh rate. LG’s monitor design is also laudable, with a versatile stand that allows for full tilt, height, and pivot adjustments, and a tidy port panel in the back. Ports include HDMI and DisplayPort, plus both upstream and downstream USB. Extra modes like black stabilizers and the ability to add a crosshair to your screen are also fun to experiment with.

LG’s monitor also supports HDR10, which is a great quality of life boost for games that support HDR and a good idea if you are thinking about upgrading your PlayStation in the near future!

Dell 27 Gaming Monitor S2721DGF

Dell’s sturdy 27-inch monitor is an excellent choice if you are looking for a monitor with more than full HD resolution. This model offers a 2560 x 1440 resolution at 144Hz with your expected HDMI connection, which could be a significant upgrade compared to your old TV. That, plus the solid design of this monitor (height, tilt, swivel, and pivot are all supported) and the 1ms response time, makes it an excellent PS accessory. We also like the protective anti-glare coating on the screen, which offers better visibility in a variety of lighting conditions.

BenQ GW2283

On a budget? You’ll love this 22-inch BenQ monitor that you can find for around $100 while still getting full HD resolution and 60Hz refresh rate. It may not be as much of an upgrade as some of our other picks, but it is a cost-effective way to add a monitor to your setup. It also comes with BenQ’s eye care software for reducing flicker and automatically adjusting brightness and color temperature, as well as options for a blue light filter — all excellent features for gaming long into the night or reducing annoying eye strain.

It also comes with two HDMI ports, which is another well-placed feature to look for in PS4 gaming monitors because it allows you to link your monitor to another device (like a PC) at the same time for easy switching! Just keep in mind, especially with smaller monitors like this, you’ll need to be closer to the screen than you would be for the average TV-and-PlayStation setup.

Asus ROG Strix XG438Q

If you’re serious about a screen upgrade, this ROG Strix model is the place to stop. Its massive 43-inch size is a better replication of a traditional TV, so distance and positioning aren’t as important (and it supports VESA mounting). It supports 4k resolution, HDR formatting, and a healthy refresh rate of 120 Hz. The anti-glare screen also offers a blue light filter and flicker-free mode. It also comes with very high color accuracy. The three HDMI 2.0 ports are also excellent for connecting and switching between a variety of devices.

These are some of the best specs you can hope for in a gaming monitor, but — especially at this size — it’s also a very pricey upgrade. Fortunately, with those inputs and the size of the monitor, it’s a capable TV replacement too, so the high cost may not be quite as important when compared to the cost of a new HDTV.

LG 27UK8050-W

This 27-inch LG model has a higher price than our first LG pick but also adds some important technology upgrades, including a 3840 x 2160 resolution, HDR10 compatible, and a USB-C port for newer accessories. Display performance also includes a 5ms response time and 60Hz refresh rate, not exactly as impressive but still solid specs for PS4 gaming (and difficult to push higher when supporting a 4k resolution). Black stabilization and dynamic action sync modes are also included. It’s a great pick if you can afford to add a few more high-end specs to your LG monitor and don’t especially care about refresh rate.

Here’s another option for those looking for a specific TV replacement or big-screen upgrade: This 32-inch monitor offers 4k resolution support with a 60Hz refresh rate, ready for the latest and sharpest content, and perfect for when you’re ready to upgrade to the PS5, etc. It also has all the eye care technology of our affordable BenQ pick, including sensors for automatically adjusting the display based on ambient lighting, blue light filter modes, and the other options that make managing eye strain so much easier. HDMI 2.0 and USB-C are both included, but the USB-C port is designed for A/V only, not charging devices.

Best PlayStation Plus Deals: Save on Essential, Plus and Premium
Best PS Plus deals

While the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 4 are excellent consoles, especially for those who don't want to invest in a gaming PC, you tend to lose out on a lot if you don't have one of Sony's online subscriptions. You see, a PlayStation Plus (PS Plus) subscription offers, is access to online multiplayer, and without it, you can't connect to online servers and play with other folks, which is a bit frustrating. Luckily, a PS Plus membership does offer some additional features, such as free games every month and access to some older PS games, all of which depend on which of the three tiers you subscribe to: Essential, Extra, and Premium.
What is PlayStation Plus?
Along with online multiplayer and other in-game network features, a PlayStation Plus Essential membership grants you access to exclusive discounts and other promotions. Perhaps the most notable benefit of PlayStation Plus is that every month, Sony gives subscribers one PlayStation 5 and two PlayStation 4 games that are free to download. You have one month to add these free PlayStation Plus games to your library.

After that, these titles are yours to keep so long as you have an active PlayStation Plus subscription. The free-to-download games are generally pretty good (they are often some of the best PS4 games that have been out for a little while), and these alone justify the cost of PS Plus even for people who don't do a lot of online gaming.

PlayStation 6: release date speculation, price, specs, and more
sony reveals customizable ps5 dualsense edge controller front and back

In a recent quote, Sony Senior Vice President Naomi Matsuoka said: "Looking ahead, PS5 will enter the latter stage of its life cycle." Many in the industry took that to mean that we may be hearing about the next PlayStation console sooner rather than later.

Considering Sony has yet to break its naming convention, it feels safe to assume whatever future home console we get will be called the PlayStation 6. But not only has the name not been officially confirmed, but neither has the idea of a next-generation PlayStation console or even a PS5 Pro. It's almost a guarantee, but technically nothing is set in stone. Rumors and potential leaks have already started stirring up excitement, so let's see what the future of PlayStation may look like according to the rumors.
