Everything announced at Summer Game Fest Kickoff 2022

The 2022’summer gaming marathon is officially in full swing as one of the biggest showcases of the summer is upon us: Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest Kickoff livestream returned after a 2021 show that featured AAA games like Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and Elden Ring. As this is a show not tied to any specific publisher or platform, we received a wide range of announcements from gaming studios big and small.

We got updates on upcoming AAA games like Gotham Knights, One Piece: Odyssey, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, and Marvel’s Midnight Suns, as well as a couple of new reveals. It was, unfortunately, a pretty underwhelming showcase overall, but a lot of games were still shown. We’ve rounded up everything that Keighley announced at Summer Game Fest Kickoff!

A team of ex-Blizzard devs at Frost Giant Studios unveiled Stormgate, a new postapocalyptic, sci-fi real-time strategy game in the style of Warcraft 3 or Starcraft. It will be free-to-play and get a beta next year. Digital Trends also got an early look at the game and learned how Frost Giant wants Stormgate to be the Elden Ring of RTS titles.

Marvel’s Midnight Suns finally got a release date

Marvel’s Midnight Suns | “Darkness Falls” Trailer

After over eight months of silence, 2K and Firaxis finally showed their card-based Marvel strategy game again. The Marvel’s Midnight Suns trailer confirms that Venom, Spider-Man, and evil versions of Hulk and Scarlet Witch are in the game. We also learned that Marvel’s Midnight Suns will finally launch for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X on October 7.

Bloober Team reveals Layers of Fear, not Silent Hill

While many hoped that Bloober Team would show its rumored Silent Hill project at Summer Game Fest, it turns out that it showed up to reveal Layers of Fears, the third Layers of Fear game. Layers of Fears is a first-person horror game made in Unreal Engine 5 and it launches on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X in early 2023.

The Last Of Us Remake, standalone multiplayer game, and TV show are coming

Some of the show’s biggest announcements, even if one of them leaked beforehand, were related to The Last of Us. Titled The Last of Us Part I to tie it in closer to the sequel, the remake overhauls the visuals, tweaks the original’s controls and level design, and adds more accessibility options. It’s coming out shockingly soon as The Last of Us Part I launches on September 2, 2021. Meanwhile, the multiplayer game got concept art, and it was confirmed that it would have a story. We also got a new image from the TV show, learned that Joel and Ellie’s video game voice actors have roles in the show, and learned that creative director Neil Druckmann directed an episode. The show wraps up filming on June 10 and will release in 2023.

Can you fix the Fortnite servers not responding error?
Nanner Ringer emote in Fortnite

The last thing you want to see when loading up Fortnite for a match with your friends, especially when a big new update is dropping, is to be hit with an error. The worst of which might be the "Fortnite servers not responding" error due to how vague it is. Most people don't know what servers are, let alone what it means when they aren't responding, except that you can't play your game. The question then becomes if you have any power to solve this issue yourself or if you're forced to wait until Epic Games addresses it on its end.
Can you fix the servers not responding error in Fortnite?

The first thing to do when encountering this error in Fortnite is to go straight to the Epic Games Help website or X account (formerly Twitter). This will let you know if it is something on Epic Games' end that is the issue and also keep you updated on the status of when the servers are expected to be fixed. Servers can also be taken down for maintenance or in preparation for major updates, which will also be accounted for here. If this is the case, there's nothing to do but wait until they announce the servers are back up and running.

Don’t ask questions! Just play this wild and weird nun game
A nun stands in a red room in Indika.

Usually, when I recommend a game, I try to give as comprehensive an overview of it as I can. I know that it's hard to get players to commit time and money to something sight unseen. But with Indika, I'm tempted to say nothing at all. It's something you should experience for yourself. If that's enough to intrigue you, you can stop reading here and head on over to Steam.

I am merciful, though, so here's an explanation for those who aren't so keen on spending $25 with no context. Launched on PC earlier this week, Indika is a new game by developer Odd Meter. It's a 19th-century narrative adventure game that follows a lowly nun trying to fit in at a monastery. She's tasked with delivering a letter across a cold Russian wasteland along with a male companion.

The best Stardew Valley mods
Emily talking to the player in Stardew Valley.

After so many years of support, it might feel like there's nothing left that needs to be added or changed in Stardew Valley. This farming sim lets you live your best life in the quiet countryside with your own farm, NPCs to meet and date, Easter eggs to find, and quests to complete.

Multiple updates have only expanded the number of things to do in a game you could already spend hundreds of hours in. But the developer behind this game is just one person, and even an entire team couldn't match the output of the entire modding community. Given the meteoric success this game has had and sustained for so many years, there have been hundreds of mods created by passionate fans. These mods can make your humble little farm life feel completely fresh, as well as smooth out a couple of lingering rough edges in the game. We've farmed up the absolute best Stardew Valley mods you should try for yourself.
Stardew Valley Expanded
Each major update to Stardew Valley adds a host of new features, but one fan just couldn't wait and decided to make their own unofficial expansion called Stardew Valley Expanded. Just looking at the feature list of this mod, you could be forgiven for thinking it was a true expansion, or maybe even a sequel. It adds 27 new NPCs, 50 more locations, 27 fish, two new farms, and even updates a couple of existing things. That's not even mentioning the new music, quests, objects, festivals, and more. The entire thing was made to feel as seamless with the base game as possible, and is intended to give that same feeling of wonder and joy players had when playing the game for the first time.
