Pay what you want for 10 DRM-free ebooks in StoryBundle’s Video Game Bundle

The ebook bundle company StoryBundle released a new package today called the Video Game Bundle that combines 10 gaming-themed ebooks for the convenient price of whatever-the-heck-you-want-to-pay. There’s a solid selection of content here if you like to think that video games can be more than a gun barrel extending out from the bottom of your screen.

The selection includes: two development journals from Prince of Persia creator Jordan Mechner; two issues of the gaming magazine Kill Screen; Confessions of the Game Doctor by Bill Kunkel; Constellation Games by Leonard Richardson; Killing is Harmless by Brendan Keogh; Generation Xbox: How Videogames Invaded Hollywood by Jamie Russell; a compendium of indie games by Mike Rose; and Ralph H. Baer’s retrospective, Videogames: In the Beginning.

The bundle release model, popularized by Humble Bundle Inc.‘s indie game bundles, offers multiple items for a negotiable price, often with added rewards like soundtracks, DRM-free downloads, and other bonuses. Purchasers can then divide their payment between multiple recipients in whichever way they choose. In this case, the authors of the books and StoryBundle itself, with an optional 10 percent going to the charities Mighty Writers or Girls Write Now.

The Video Game Bundle is StoryBundle’s first collection of video game ebooks. As with all such bundles, there’s a catch: three of the titles are only available to those who pay $10 or more.

Layoffs have unfortunately become a nearly nonstop occurrence in the video game industry over the past year. In 2023, over 10,000 workers at game studios lost their jobs, according to data from Game Industry Layoffs. In January 2024 alone, Kotaku reports that over 6,000 developers have already been laid off.

Layoffs at Microsoft hit particularly hard for players, as nearly 2,000 Microsoft developers were let go after years of optimistic promises from Xbox leadership over the Activision Blizzard acquisition, and a survival game project was canceled. While that's been the biggest wave so far this year, we've seen plenty of other companies cutting staff, from Riot Games to Eidos.

We got a new trailer for Bloober Team's long-awaited Silent Hill 2 remake during today's PlayStation State of Play stream, which highlighted the horror game's reworked combat. While it still doesn't have a release date, publisher Konami did reveal an entirely new spinoff, Silent Hill: The Short Message, which is available now.

The announcement trailer for the entirely new Silent Hill game, which is officially available and free of play on the PlayStation 5 as of this exact moment, depicts the series' notoriously creepy visuals and a storyline involving a woman named Maya contacting the protagonist, Anita, on a smartphone as the player is drawn deeper into The Short Message's dreary, graffiti-covered, and extremely haunted apartment complex.

2024 isn’t going to be as jam-packed with new AAA games as 2022 and 2023 were, giving us more time to go back and appreciate the classics. Anniversaries and the celebrations that follow are commonplace in the video game industry, especially if that anniversary is a multiple of five. Plenty of fantastic, influential games will hit milestones this year, but a few stand out. Some could even offer teasers into what might be in store for 2024 if developers plan to celebrate their classics. Regardless of whether these birthdays come with any presents, these are 10 video game anniversaries worth celebrating this year.
Warcraft -- 30 years

I can’t talk about video game anniversaries in 2024 without bringing up Warcraft. 2024 is filled with milestones for the series, thanks to some uniform releases from Blizzard. The entire franchise will turn 30 on November 15, as that's the day Warcraft: Orcs & Humans released and redefined the real-time strategy genre in 1994. Then there’s World of Warcraft, the most popular MMO of all time, which turns 20 in November 2023. Finally, the Warcraft digital collectible card game Hearthstone turns ten on March 11. To celebrate, Blizzard Entertainment plans to release World of Warcraft’s The War Within expansion and add Cataclysm to World of Warcraft Classic.
