Lenovo Offers New Notebooks

Lenovo introduced its Ideapad notebooks at CES last year, and this year they’re bringing some new laptops to the party.

The IdeaPad Y650 will have a 16-inch display. At $1,199 it offers up to 4GB of DDR3 (double data rate 3) main memory and can go up to 500GB of hard disk drive data storage, using an Intel Centrino 2 platform with Intel Core 2 dual processors.

The IdeaPads Y550 and Y450 both retail for $829. The Y550 has the same memory and data configuration as the Y650 with a 15.6-inch screen, Intel Core 2 Duo processors and the Intel GM45 chip set. The Y450 is the same, but with a 14-inch screen.

And then there’s the desktop, the IdeaCenter A600, which packs a whopping 4GB of DDR3 memory and 1TB of hard disk drive data storage, along with an Intel Core 2 Duo or Pentium Dual Core processor. With a 21.5-inch frameless monitor, it’s set to sell for $999. It should go on sale in April, with the laptops available from March.

The next big Windows 11 update has a new hardware requirement
Windows 11 device sitting on a stool.

Microsoft’s upcoming Windows 11 24H2 update is expected to arrive with yet another hardware requirement. Centered around SSE4.2 or Streaming SIMD Extensions 4.2, a crucial component for modern processors, the new Windows 11 24H2 with build 26080 will only boot on CPUs that support the instruction set.

This information comes from Bob Pony on X (previously known as Twitter), following earlier reports in February where he claimed that CPUs lacking support for the POPCNT instruction were no longer compatible with Windows 11. The updated requirement is essentially the same, except that they now mandate the entire SSE 4.2 instruction set instead of just the POPCNT instruction within it, as was previously required.

Even the new mid-tier Snapdragon X Plus beats Apple’s M3
A photo of the Snapdragon X Plus CPU in the die

You might have already heard of the Snapdragon X Elite, the upcoming chips from Qualcomm that everyone's excited about. They're not out yet, but Qualcomm is already announcing another configuration to live alongside it: the Snapdragon X Plus.

The Snapdragon X Plus is pretty similar to the flagship Snapdragon X Elite in terms of everyday performance but, as a new chip tier, aims to bring AI capabilities to a wider portfolio of ARM-powered laptops. To be clear, though, this one is a step down from the flagship Snapdragon X Elite, in the same way that an Intel Core Ultra 7 is a step down from Core Ultra 9.
