LG is dipping its toe into the music world (sadly, not like BlackBerry once did) with the launch of a new music service tied into its very best Android smartphones. However, it’s not a rival to Apple Music, Spotify, or MixRadio. Instead, LG’s giving away two songs for free each month, with the option to buy more with an up to 50-percent discount on the normal price.

What makes it special? LG’s pushing the quality aspect, in a similar way to Tidal’s approach to online music. The tracks it will deliver are of a far higher quality than standard files, and six times “richer and clearer than the sound quality of a typical CD,” according to LG. The 24bit/192kHz files are only compatible with devices that support 24bit audio, which is where the need for a high-end LG phone comes in.

The list includes the very latest LG G4 smartphone, and its two predecessors, the LG G3 and the LG G2. Additionally, the recently released LG G Flex 2 is also ready to support the files. LG’s not releasing a standalone app for its new music service, but will use the existing LG SmartWorld app that comes pre-installed on all its phones. It’s also making the service available on the Web, at LGworld.com.

LG’s ready to switch on its music service during August, and it’ll be available in almost 70 countries around the world, a list that includes the U.S., the UK, Australia, France, Italy, Russia, Brazil, and China. While it all sounds very interesting, there are some key details missing, ranging from the approximate price of the tracks after discount, the DRM situation, the range of songs available, and the final launch date.

All this information is sure to be released over the coming weeks, and we’ll keep you updated here.

Someone taking a phone call on the aloe Google Pixel 8a.

A week ahead of its annual developers' conference, Google has dropped a new budget phone in its Pixel-A series. The Google Pixel 8a retains the line’s signature look with a horizontal camera island at the back, but serves it in a package that embraces rounded corners and also happens to be fractionally smaller and lighter

The most meaningful changes are reserved for the display, silicon, and battery. The OLED screen’s size remains the same at 6.1 inches with a resolution of 1080 x 2400 pixels. However, the refresh rate has been increased to 120Hz, up from the Google Pixel 7a's 90Hz display. This HDR-ready panel offers a peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits and also features a fingerprint sensor underneath.

Apple has quietly killed its cheapest iPad
Three 2021 iPads are stacked on a table.

The iPad lineup has received a price bump after Apple quietly killed its cheapest iPad model. Apple’s 9th-generation iPad used to cost $329, but has been discontinued. At the same time, the company has reduced the 10th-gen iPad’s starting price by $100, which means it’s now priced at $349. As a result, getting the cheapest iPad means you'll now spend $20 more than before.

The 9th-gen Apple iPad was launched in 2021 with the A13 chipset and Apple's Center Stage featur,e but retained the same old design with the already-old Lightning port and home button. With Apple moving to a USB-C port on all devices to comply with EU laws, it was inevitable that Apple would discontinue the 9th-gen iPad this year. The iPhone SE remains the only Apple product with a home button and a Lightning port that's still available in the company's lineup.
