We were wondering when Samsung, a company famous for knocking out multiple versions of a device, would come up with a Galaxy tablet aimed squarely at children.

Say hello to the Galaxy Tab 3 Kids. Yes, it’s a name that leaves you in no doubt as to who it’s aimed at. That’s right, the dribblers and diaper fillers.

As you might expect, the child-friendly Android 4.1 slate has a tough, rugged frame – perfect for when it’s sat on or launched across an open space to great laughter – and comes pre-loaded with a range of apps covering education, games, and e-books.

Parents can choose which apps to make available for their kids via the Application Manager, while a Time Management feature allows parents to set time limits for app use.

GALAXY Tab 3 Kids_1Samsung designers agreed on seven inches as the perfect screen size for children, and also decided that a 1024 x 600 display would be good enough. After all, have you ever heard a small child complain about a pixels-per-inch deficiency?

Powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, the Tab 3 Kids also incorporates front- and rear-facing cameras, providing an excellent opportunity for your child to get creative. It comes with 8GB of internal storage, though this can be expanded via its microSD slot.

Extras include a Kids Case (shown in top image) comprising a carrying handle, stand and C pen for on-screen drawing.

Samsung co-CEO and head of mobile communications JK Shin had a couple of words to say about the new device. “It’s no secret that kids are using technology more and more,” he said on the company’s website. “We saw an opportunity to create a device just for kids that provides them with an intuitive, fun and kid-friendly user experience filled with rich, interactive and educational content that parents will love.”

Of course, the Korean tech giant isn’t the first to offer a child-friendly tablet, with Toys “R” Us, Polaroid, and Vivitar just a few of the many companies to have stepped into the market.

Samsung’s new tablet, price currently unknown, will hit stores in Korea in September, with an international rollout promised soon after.

Adults with kids who tend to use Mom and Dad’s pricier tablet as some sort of tool, like a hammer, or a toy (Frisbee?), may well be interested in giving the Tab 3 Kids a closer look, for it may save them a bit of money in the long run.
