Microsoft’s September 22 event could reveal Surface Duo 2, new Surface Laptop

Microsoft is holding an online-only “Fall 2021 Event” on September 22. It is widely believed this Microsoft Event could feature both the Surface Duo 2 and the new Surface Laptop model.

Previous leaks have hinted at an impending launch of those products, but a closer look at the event tease on Twitter also reveals what could be a bonus Surface Pro device. Zooming in on the image, you can see what looks to be a Surface Type Cover keyboard and a slim Surface Pro model with the kickstand extended out. Media invites even mention that Microsoft will “talk about devices and Windows 11.”

It’s been rumored for some time that Microsoft could be shaking up the Surface lineup this fall. A Surface Laptop Pro model could replace the Surface Book 4 and come with a new design and Nvidia’s new RTX graphics.

As for the Surface Duo 2, it is believed to feature triple cameras on the rear of the device, as well as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 processor, support for 5G, and NFC technology. Leaked images of the device were spotted early in July, and Geekbench results recently confirmed the device does in fact exist.

Even a Surface Go 3 model might be a possibility for this event. Recent Geekbench benchmarks suggested that Microsoft had been testing the device since April. The benchmarks revealed a modest boost in processing power, with the device reportedly packing Intel Amber Lake-Y Pentium Gold 6500Y and Intel Core i3-10100Y processors under the hood.

There has been no word on a redesigned Surface Pro 8 model, however. It could end up being the surprise of the event.

Other than the teaser tweet, official details on what to expect are scarce. A Surface event would be perfect given that Windows 11 will be coming on October 5. Microsoft would need the hardware to showcase new software. Surface chief Panos Panay just so happens to be in charge of both now, so expectations should be set high.

Microsoft has created a website for the event, with the webcast set to begin at 8 a.m. PT on September 22. We’ll be watching live, and will be providing updates come event day.

Microsoft is finally making Copilot+ laptops useful for AI

Microsoft's Copilot+ PC initiative has been a smash hit, with many of them landing among the best laptops, but not for the AI hardware inside. Now, finally, Microsoft is putting the neural processing unit (NPU) inside Copilot+ PCs to good use. Starting today and going throughout the next two months, Microsoft will begin rolling out the 24H2 update for all Windows 11 PCs, and in the process, unlock several features for Copilot+ PCs, including the highly controversial Recall.

Recall is definitely the star of the show here, which will start showing up on Copilot+ laptops with a Snapdragon X chipset throughout October. Last week, Microsoft laid the groundwork for the release of Recall, detailing the security architecture of the feature and addressing some major criticisms of it. Now, for example, Recall is turned off instead of on by default. Microsoft is also allowing users to filter websites and giving users more control over their snapshots, including deleting them all.

Windows Latest has spotted a recent support document post from Microsoft confirming native Ahead of Time (AOT) support has been added to the Windows App SDK. According to Microsoft, this could bring major improvements to the launch times of Windows 11 apps. In its own testing, Microsoft has measured a 50% reduction in start times and around an 8x reduction in package size.

The Windows App SDK exists to help developers use classic desktop app frameworks to make apps with access to modern APIs that can be used across all kinds of Windows devices.

With just a little more than a year left before Windows 10 hits its end-of-life, Microsoft has been busy encouraging people to upgrade to Windows 11. One of the hurdles with getting PCs upgraded to Windows 11, though, are the hardware requirements -- and now they're cracked down on harder.

A recent beta build of Windows 11 has patched the well-used "setup.exe /product server" workaround that allowed you to completely bypass the system requirements check and run Windows 11 on a non-compliant machine -- in other words, a machine without TPM 2.0.
