With the official release of Forza Horizon 3 just around the corner, AMD and Nvidia are getting players ready by serving up drivers optimized for the game on Windows 10. Customers who purchased the “Ultimate Edition” can go ahead and start playing the open world racing game now, so the drivers arrive just in time before speedsters put the petal to the metal.

For starters, Nvidia unleashed GeForce Game Ready Drivers version 372.90. In addition to optimizing Forza Horizon 3 performance, the package provides an SLI profile for ARK: Survival Evolved. This is an open-world survival game that throws a man and woman onto a mysterious island. They’re both naked, starving, and cold, fighting off dinosaurs while hunting down food and building shelters to survive.

Nvidia’s new drivers fix a number of issues for Windows 7 through Windows 10. For instance, on Windows 10, they resolve an issue that caused flickering in Star Wars: The Old Republic, and an issue the caused Rise of the Tomb Raider to crash after extended gameplay. Another resolved issue stems from the HTC Vive and the GTX 1080 that prevented the headset from activating when connected through the card’s DisplayPort.

On the G-Sync front, the new drivers fixed a bug that caused games to lag when set to a windowed mode and G-Sync activated. Another G-Sync issue involved World of Warcraft where screen tearing occurred with V-Sync enabled as well. G-Sync is Nvidia’s tech that syncs the refresh rate of a compatible display with the output of the graphics card, eliminating image tearing and stuttering.

As for Team AMD, the company released Radeon Software Crimson Edition 16.9.2. In addition to supporting Forza Horizon 3, the software adds a CrossFire profile for Dreadnought. This game pits teams of five players each against each other in outer space using massive warships. These ships come in a variety of classes including heavy, assault, sniper, support, and scouting. Captains can customize their ships with a number of weapons, modules, and officer briefings.

AMD’s new Radeon package fixes a list of issues on the Windows platform such as intermittent mouse cursor corruption on Radeon RX 400 Series graphics cards. The software also addresses an issue regarding portrait Eyefinity display configurations that caused flickering when launching or exiting games based on DirectX 12.

Other fixed issues provided by AMD’s new software include Rocket League where gamers experienced flickering when running Radeon RX 400 Series cards in CrossFire mode. The software even addresses an issue caused by Windows 10 Anniversary Edition that dropped HDMI Audio when resuming from standby mode. Another Anniversary Edition problem crashed Radeon Settings after modifying game profiles.

PC gamers wanting to get in on the Forza Horizon 3 action will need to meet the following system requirements to play the game. Note that Forza Horizon 3 falls under the Play Anywhere umbrella, meaning PC gamers can play it on the Xbox One as well while console owners can play on Windows 10, too.

Study finds humans will talk to AI ghosts of the dead as reincarnations, and it’s pretty grim
The first AI ghost study is in. The results are about as complicated as you'd expect.
VR Headset, Person, Face

A new study from the University of Colorado Boulder confirms something that sounds both impressive and concerning. People find interacting with AI simulations of their dead loved ones deeply meaningful, and most will come away wanting to do it again.

The researchers call it a "generative ghost," which is a clear reference to generative AI, but I’d still prefer to call it unsettling.

Apple has been selling Hide My Email to keep your real email address hidden, but it has a vulnerability that does the exact opposite. The worst part is that the company has known about it for a year.

Hide My Email, part of Apple’s paid iCloud+ subscription, lets users generate anonymous email addresses for signing up to a website, so that their personal or work email remains free of promotional emails and spam.

I hate sharing my Mac, but a face-unlocking app finally cured my privacy paranoia
Someone finally built the app locker every Mac user has been asking for.
FaceGate in action on Mac

If you have ever handed your Mac to a friend, family member, or coworker for "just a minute," you know the mild panic that follows. Sure, your Mac has a lock screen, but once someone is past it, they can open Messages, Photos, Notes, Mail, WhatsApp, and your browser.

iPhones had the same issue, but Apple solved it by adding an app lock feature with the iOS 18 update. Sadly, no such feature exists for macOS. That’s where the new FaceGate app for Mac can help you. It’s a free and open-source app that lets you lock apps on your Mac and even has some novel tricks up its sleeve. So, let’s talk about it, shall we?
