How to play Battlefield 2042 open beta on Xbox and PC

Like PlayStation, you can pre-load the open beta via the Xbox Store, Steam, Epic, and Origin. However, Xbox players will need an Xbox Live Gold subscription to access and play the open beta.

Battlefield 2042 early access

If you pre-ordered Battlefield 2042, you’ll gain access to the open beta 48 hours before everyone else. Pre-orders can play starting on October 6 at 07:00 UTC, while everyone else is barred until October 8. There is still time to pre-order Battlefield 2042 if you’re looking for early access. The beta ends on October 9, so pre-orders will get several full days of gaming.

The Battlefield 2042 open beta is currently available for download via the PlayStation Store and Xbox Store for console, and Steam, Epic, and Origin for PC Players. Old-gen players can also participate in the open beta, giving a much-needed Battlefield win to PS4 and Xbox One Players.

Is the Battlefield 2042 open beta crossplay?

Yes, the Battlefield 2042 open beta supports crossplay. PlayStation, Xbox, and PC players can play together in what’s supposed to be the ultimate Battlefield experience. However, your progression in the beta will not carry over to the main game at launch.

What can we expect?

Orbital map from Battlefield 2042.

According to EA, players can expect a slice of what Battlefield 2042 has to offer. Per EA’s FAQ page:

“Put boots on the ground in the classic Conquest mode on Orbital — a map where enemy fire and chaotic weather conditions can help or hinder your fight.” – EA

Orbital, as seen in the trailer, is the map with the rocket ship launch. While players were probably hoping to experience the first tornado in Battlefield history, they’ll have to settle for a launching spaceship. Perhaps the tornado will make an appearance? We’re eager to find out.

It looks like we’ll only be playing conquest mode, which isn’t too bad considering it’s the preferred way to play any Battlefield game. However, we’re hoping to see how these natural disasters pan out and if they truly shake up the game.

Other than the apparent map and game mode limitations, there’s no reason to believe players won’t have full access to every Specialist, weapon, and map-specific vehicle in Battlefield 2042.

Battlefield 2042 officially releases on November 19, 2021, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.

The best FPS games for PS5
Promotional art of squad in Call of Duty: Vanguard.

Ever since Doom became a mainstream hit, first-person shooters, or Doom clones, as they were originally called, have easily taken the throne as the most popular gaming genre. While originally thought to be a genre only possible, or at least enjoyable, on PCs, console FPS games have come so far that they now equal or eclipse the number of players on PC. In the decades since we started shooting demons, FPS games have explored just about every possible setting, time period, and style. Sure, we're still shooting demons today, but in a way that looks and plays far better than ever before.

The PlayStation 5 is the perfect home for FPS titles. Not only can it pump out the best graphics of any Sony console to date, but the solid-state drive (SSD) allows for insane loading speeds, and the DualSense controller's adaptive triggers can make each gun feel unique in your hands. There is plenty of variety in what type of FPS you can play on your PlayStation 5, from realistic military shooters and post-apocalyptic survival horror to bright and colorful comedic games and pure multiplayer experiences. Whatever your taste is for a shooter, these are the best FPS games available on the PS5.

Battlefield 2042’s new season adds a map set in the developer’s homeland
Soldiers fighting on Battlefield 2042 Season 3 map Spearhead.

EA unveiled everything players can expect from Battlefield 2042 Season 3: Escalation ahead of its November 22 start date. The most notable addition is a brand new map called Spearhead, which is set in Sweden, the homeland of the Battlefield series' main developer, DICE.
Surprisingly, Spearhead is the first Battlefield map set in DICE's home country. The map is centered around two Nordvik manufacturing facilities in the Swedish wilderness, surrounded by very rocky and uneven landscapes. It looks like a map full of interesting terrain that will benefit some vehicles, like the brand-new EMKV90-TOR tank, more than others. Later in Season 3: Escalation, the Manifest map will be reworked to be less cluttered and more tightly designed, while a Breakaway rework will move the Oil Rig to a location much closer to where most action on the map takes place.

Of course, Season 3: Escalation is more than just a new map, battle pass, and some map reworks. A new assault Special named Rasheed Zain is an Egyptian soldier whose legs were amputated after a military accident and replaced with prosthetics. He wields an Airburst launcher and recharges his health very fast after getting a kill, making him great on the front lines of a fight.
The Rorsch MK-4 railgun, the NVK-S22 shotgun, NVK-P125 long-range pistol, the throwing knife, and vault weapons XM8 and A-91 spice things up on the weapons front. EA and DICE also teased that they'll finally start to rework Battlefield 2042's Specialist and Class systems toward the end of the season.
Battlefield 2042 Season 3: Escalation begins on November 22 across all platforms. The game will also be added to Xbox Game Pass Ultimate via EA Play on that date. Later, the PS5 version of Battlefield 2042 will be free to try between December 16 and December 23.
