Destiny 2 is going free to play on Google Stadia for all players with an account

Destiny 2 will become Google Stadia’s first free-to-play game. Starting on November 19, Bungie’s looter shooter will be free for all Stadia users regardless of whether or not they have a subscription.

Anyone with an account for the Stadia cloud-gaming service will be able to play Destiny 2: New Light, which features the core free-to-play game with no expansions. The game is already free to play on services like Steam, but this is the first time Stadia has made a title free.

Players who grab the game will get access to many of Stadia’s perks, including being able to play across devices, but there are some notable caveats. The game will be locked at 1080p without a Pro subscription.

As is the case on all platforms, the game currently doesn’t support crossplay, though Bungie says it plans to add it down the line. That means that Stadia users can only play the game with other Stadia users, which is something for fans to consider when deciding where to play. Destiny 2’s Stadia-specific player base has been erratic over the past year. The game’s player base dropped by 50% in January, coming down to nearly 8,000 players total.

The game’s current lack of crossplay support for any platform combined with Stadia’s smaller user base may not give players Destiny 2’s full social experience. However, the free-to-play move gives players who’ve yet to experience Google Stadia a chance to finally try out its features.

The free release drops exactly one year after Stadia’s initial launch. The platform originally launched with Destiny 2: The Collection, which included all of the game’s DLC content up to that point. The collection is leaving Stadia on November 19, but current Pro subscribers can add it to their library before it leaves in order to keep it.

Destiny 2: Lightfall fails to deliver its Avengers: Infinity War moment

The comparison between Destiny 2: Lightfall and Avengers: Infinity War is immediate from the opening moments of Bungie's latest expansion. There is no more exposition to get through; the Witness, a mythical villain that represents the root of the Darkness that Guardians have fought against for close to a decade, is here, and the Traveler who has given our heroes the Light and their god-like abilities is under direct threat. The stakes couldn't be higher, but Lightfall doesn't live up to that moment.

I'm not drawing connections here that shouldn't be made -- the bombastic opening moments of Lightfall call back Infinity War's unrelenting momentum in its first act. The Traveler is under siege in Lightfall and Guardians are dismantled by a flick of the Witness' wrist, echoing the immediate slaughter brought by the hands of Thanos moments before he arrived on Earth. That feeling is the same; our antagonist is here, and there's nowhere else to run. In the final moments of the campaign, a member of my fireteam even exclaimed, "hey, that's a line from Infinity War."

Who is Xur?
If you're new to Destiny 2 and need a bit more information about how this works, you should know that Xur is a special vendor who sells exotic weapons and armor. Each week, he comes to the solar system with a slate of goods, including an exotic weapon and one piece of exotic armor for each character class. As of The Witch Queen, he now stocks legendary armor and weapons and sells additional exotic weapons with random rolls every week.
Where to find Xur (December 30 to January 2)
The trouble with Xur is finding him. We always know when Xur will show up -- at the 10 a.m. PT/1 p.m. ET reset each Friday. The question is where Xur will be. Google Stadia has started issuing refunds — here’s what to look for

Google will begin issuing refunds to Google Stadia customers amid the imminent shutdown of the game streaming platform. The Silicon Valley tech giant said on Stadia's support page that starting November 9, it will automatically attempt to process refunds for every purchase, including games, DLC, hardware such as the Stadia controller, and subscription fees other than Stadia Pro.

Stadia customers who made fewer than 20 purchases will receive one email notification of a refund for each transaction. Stadia customers with 21 purchases or more will get a single email summarizing all of the refund attempts, including instructions on potential additional steps needed to complete the refund.
