Rockstar plans big updates for Red Dead Online, GTA Online

Rockstar Games is going to update both Red Dead Online and Grand Theft Auto Online in the coming weeks.

“With both games playing home to more players than ever before in recent months, we know the community has been awaiting news of any updates for GTA Online and Red Dead Online, and we are happy to share that both games will receive exciting new updates in the weeks ahead.” the company said in a blog post.

The Red Dead Online update is going to be “massive,” with a new Frontier Pursuit mode focusing on naturalism, and a new role as well. There’s also going to be an outlaw pass and “tons of community-requested features and fixes, and much more to play and discover in the months to come.” That update arrives on July 28.

The GTA Online update will come later in the summer and include “a fun mix of diverse new content from the game’s massive array of experiences to enjoy.”

The company also thanked players for giving feedback on the games, and said it added number of features based on those suggestions. They include adding musical instruments in Red Dead Online, as well as a new ability to run businesses through the Master Control Terminal in GTA Online. Rockstar also said it was making sure that the games remain fair and safe for all players.

“We are also committed to ensuring that our games are fun for everyone and as safe as possible from modders, cheaters, hackers, and those who seek to harass other players. So far this year, we have taken action on hundreds of thousands of players caught violating community rules across both games. Please help us keep our communities safe and fun by reporting any sort of cheating either directly in-game or via our dedicated web reporting tools for both Red Dead Online and GTA Online,” the company said.

Red Dead Online is updated fairly often with bonuses like extra in-game money or discounts on weapons or horses, but the last big update for the game happened in December of last year. Some players were so upset about the lack of new stuff that they dressed up as clowns in the game to protest.

2023 was a roller coaster for the video games industry. On the software side, it was a historic year for new releases. We got everything from big success stories like Baldur's Gate 3 and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom to memorable indies in Venba and Chants of Sennaar. The most notable gaming news stories of 2023 run the gamut from genuinely exciting to thoroughly disappointed. That speaks to a video game industry bound to head into an odd 2024 that lacks the known quantity bombshells of this year and continues to reel from layoffs. In last year's iteration of this article, my editor said that the 2020s are shaping up to be "the most pivotal decade in gaming history when all is said and done." If this year is anything to go by, that will almost certainly be true. These were the gaming stories that defined 2023, for better and much worse.

Red Dead Redemption on Switch is already discounted in holiday sale

Nintendo is running a Switch sale for the holiday season -- and it's full of discounts. Chief among those is a 30% price cut on the recently released Red Dead Redemption port for Switch, alongside deals on new releases like Sonic Superstars.

Nintendo's annual holiday eShop sale features discounts on over 30 games. While new Nintendo games like Pikmin 4 and Super Mario Bros. Wonder aren't included, a lot of classic third-party games are available for a bargain.

Red Dead Redemption is coming to Nintendo Switch and PS4 this month

The original Red Dead Redemption is coming to two new platforms, PS4 and Nintendo Switch, later this month. It'll retail for $50 on both platforms.

Rockstar Games' open-world western game first launched in 2010 for Xbox 360 and PS3. It was critically acclaimed and a smash sales hit, creating a new franchise for Rockstar that could stand alongside the likes of Grand Theft Auto. It received a sequel, Red Dead Redemption 2, in 2019, but the original Red Dead Redemption remained stuck on older platforms outside of backward compatibility support on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.
That's why fans got excited when a rating for the game from the Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea popped up. We've now learned that this rating is for new Nintendo Switch and PS4 ports of Red Dead Redemption by Double Eleven Studios. Red Dead Redemption will release across both of those platforms digitally on August 17, with a physical launch to follow on October 13.

It will cost $50 and includes the base campaign as well as the zombie-infested Undead Nightmare expansion; the Red Dead Online multiplayer is not included. This is the first time Red Dead Redemption will ever be on a Nintendo system, although it doesn't look like the port will have much in the way of Switch-exclusive features. That said, a press release does reveal that this will be the first version of the game to include Brazilian Portuguese, Korean, Latin American Spanish, Polish, Russian, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese localizations.
Red Dead Redemption comes out on PS4 and Nintendo Switch on August 17.
