Remastered ‘Secret of Mana’ coming to PS4, Vita, and PC in February 2018

Square-Enix has announced some details and a release date for the 3-D remastered

Secret of Mana, one of the most popular role-playing games ever made. The new version, with improved visuals, online multiplayer, upgraded gameplay, and an enhanced musical score, will be available soon for PlayStation 4, Vita, and Steam users.

The original Secret of Mana is included as one of the games in the Super NES Classic, but the new version will launch in February 2018, just in time for the game’s 25th anniversary.

Any dedicated gamer’s list of best Super NES games will undoubtedly include Secret of Mana among the top ten. The beloved 16-bit role-playing game, released in 1993, was a huge hit for Nintendo and spawned a raft of sequels. It followed the adventures of Randi, Primm, and Popoi (although the characters didn’t have names in the original SNES release) in a quest to defeat the evil Thantos in the flying Mana fortress.

Fitting somewhere in the fractured Final Fantasy family tree, Secret of Mana was actually a follow-up to a spinoff named Final Fantasy Adventure for the original Game Boy. A 3-D remake, Adventures of Mana, made a surprise appearance on PS Vita last year.

The Secret of Mana sequel was never released in the U.S., although the recent Japanese launch of the Mana trilogy collection for the Nintendo Switch has fans hopeful for a localized version.

The game was originally developed as a launch title for the SNES-CD peripheral, but after the deal between Nintendo and Sony fell apart, parts of the storyline and graphics were cut out due to space limitations on the SNES cartridge. Many of the featured introduces in Mana, such as real-time battles, were later expanded and used in landmark RPGs like Chrono Trigger and Secret of Evermore.

If you’re a dedicated Square-Enix fan, there will also be a Collector’s Edition available in Japan for the PlayStation version. In addition to the game, the Secret of Mana Collector’s Edition includes a pop-up storybook, three figures, and the soundtrack.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake release date set, launches first for PS4

Final Fantasy fans were treated to a new trailer for Final Fantasy 7 Remake after listening to orchestral performances of music from the franchise on Sunday, June 9. That trailer closed with the long-awaited reveal of the game’s release date: March 3, 2020. It will launch on PlayStation 4 before any other platforms

The producers of Final Fantasy 7 Remake stated in the past that the game would be released in multiple parts and, in 2016, clarified that Final Fantasy 13, 13-2, and Lightning Returns were being used as the blueprint. The trailer makes no mention of multiple parts and here’s the story synopsis from the latest press release:
“Rebuilding and expanding upon the legendary RPG for today, Final Fantasy 7 Remake tells the story of a world fallen under the control of the Shinra Electric Power Company, a shadowy corporation controlling the planet’s very life force as mako energy. In the sprawling city of Midgar, an anti-Shinra organization calling themselves Avalanche have stepped up their resistance. Cloud Strife, a former member of Shinra’s elite Soldier unit now turned mercenary, lends his aid to the group, unaware of the epic adventures that await him.”
There’s not a lot to discern from the summary from the press release and, while the description of the game sounds like a tiny chunk of the full Final Fantasy 7 experience, it’s not very different from the synopsis for the original game. Here’s the story summary from the PC port of FF7 on Steam:
“In Midgar, a city controlled by the mega-conglomerate Shinra Inc., the No. 1 Mako Reactor has been blown up by a rebel group, Avalanche. Avalanche was secretly formed to wage a rebellion against Shinra Inc., an organization which is absorbing Mako energy, destroying the natural resources of the planet. Cloud, a former member of Shinra's elite combat force, Soldier, was involved with the bombing of the Mako Reactor. Can Cloud and Avalanche protect the planet from the huge, formidable enemy, Shinra Inc.?”
A pre-order for Final Fantasy 7 Remake is live on retailer websites as well, but there’s no additional information included in the listings. Square Enix hosts its annual E3 conference later on Monday, and with the release date official, the studio likely has some other bits of new information to share.

NMCS Texture Pack

Honestly, New Vegas was never a looker. Even upon release, it was a bit behind the times in terms of graphical fidelity, and two generations later, it isn't aging all that well. The NMCS Texture Pack doesn't bring every aspect of the world up to a modern standard, but what it does upgrade is incredibly impressive. This mod completely retextures roads, environments, plants, vehicles, buildings, and more. What it won't change is how the sky, water, clothing, NPCs, weapons, and a handful of other things appear. Xbox Games Showcase coming this summer alongside mysterious game reveal

Microsoft has set the date for its Xbox Games Showcase this June. It's also teasing a Direct that will immediately follow the showcase, but won't say what that's for just yet.

The Xbox Games Showcase will return at 10 a.m. PT on June 9. Like all of its showcases, Microsoft plans to stream this presentation across its YouTube, Twitch, and Facebook, although it will also give away tickets to see the show in person via Xbox FanFest. According to the Xbox Wire post announcing the livestream, this is Microsoft's "first Showcase featuring games from our portfolio of studios across Activision, Blizzard, Bethesda, and Xbox Game Studios, in addition to titles from our third-party partners."
