YouTube has a new destination for gamers as it plans to shutter gaming app

Google is retiring its YouTube Gaming app and folding some of the features into a new gaming destination on its main site, the company said on Tuesday, September 18.

The app launched in 2015 as part of efforts to take on video-gaming platform Twitch, but in a post on the YouTube blog on Tuesday, the company said it intends to retire the Android and iOS app in March 2019 and instead turn its attention to improving its gaming offerings on the main YouTube site.

YouTube Gaming — the app and desktop versions — offers livestreams and archived videos of tens of thousands of games, each one with its own page. Live chats with other gamers is another feature of the service, and players can peruse video recommendations based on their favorite games.

In its post, YouTube said that although it has a “strong and vibrant audience” for its gaming app, “the amount of gamers we are able to reach is far bigger on YouTube,” which around 200 million gamers visit on a daily basis. In other words, too few people were downloading and using the YouTube gaming app.

A brand-new gaming destination can be found at youtube.com/gaming (YouTube’s old gaming site is still live at the time of writing), which should include enough stuff to keep even the most dedicated gamers happy. As you’d expect, you’ll find top live games and the latest gaming videos from your subscriptions, as well as dedicated shelves for livestreams and trending videos. Keen to grow its creator base, YouTube will also be highlighting up-and-coming creators who are emerging as popular figures among YouTube’s gaming fans.

YouTube’s gaming app allowed Google developers to test new features that included “Game Pages for better discoverability, Super Chat and Channel Memberships to help fans show support for their favorite creators, and Dark Theme.” Audience response to these features was “so positive” that developers transferred them from the YouTube Gaming app to the main YouTube experience.

YouTube said more than 50 billion hours of gaming content was viewed on its streaming service in 2017. With this renewed effort to improve the experience for gamers on its main site, it can realistically hope to push that figure even higher throughout the rest of this year.

YouTuber Jacksfilms unveils party game Be Funny Now!
A player responds to an OMG prompt in Be Funny Now.

Comedy YouTuber Jacksfilms fully unveiled Be Funny Now! -- a casual party game based on his YouTube series Yesterday I Asked You -- in a new episode of his Q&A show Jackask.
In Be Funny Now, up to eight players will be presented with a question or drawing prompt. Players then present their answers or drawings to the others, who vote for and award points to their favorites. The player with the most points at the end of the match wins. Be Funny Now will let players create private matches, though players will also have the option to join public games alone or with friends. There will also be a daily prompt to which players can submit answers. Players can also vote for their favorite response to that prompt, and the person who gets the most votes will get a unique cosmetic item.
I made a free game. Yes I'll elaborate.
Be Funny Now is based on Yesterday I Asked You (YIAY), a show where Jacksfilms (real name: Jack Douglass) asks his viewers a question and then highlights their funniest answers. Jacksfilms has been a content creator on YouTube since 2006. Over the past 15-plus years, he has garnered over 4.7 million subscribers through parody videos, skits, and recurring series like Your Grammar Sucks, Jackask, and YIAY. Developer Galvanic Games helped Jacksfilms with the development of the game.
Be Funny Now will be a free-to-play game with purchasable cosmetics and in-game ads after matches, though Jacksfilms promises it won't be pay-to-win or pay-to-play in the Q&A video. Overall, this game seems a lot more earnest and creator-driven than most YouTuber games, likely because Jacksfilms funded the game's development. Be Funny Now looks like it could be a fun alternative to the Jackbox Party Pack games, so casual party game fans should keep an eye out for this game even if they don't follow Jacksfilms or watch YIAY.
Be Funny Now is currently slated to be released for PC via Steam, iOS, and Android in April 2022.

Nintendo is erasing its music, and community, from YouTube
Bowser holds Peach in Super Mario Odyssey.

Nintendo has long been known for its expansive range of high-quality, nostalgic tunes, creating everything from the inquisitive piano sounds of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild to the tear-jerking leitmotifs found throughout the soundtrack of Pokémon Mystery Dungeon. While Nintendo sometimes releases official soundtracks of its games, the majority of its music can only be found within the games themselves, which makes it difficult to listen to a favorite song. To fill the gap, some creators have taken it on themselves to upload songs, soundtracks, and entire collections of Nintendo music to platforms like YouTube in order to make it more easily accessible by fans.

The Weather Channel is coming to YouTube TV
YouTube TV on Apple TV.

The Weather Channel -- which previously had seen relatively small reach on streaming platforms in the United States -- is starting to branch out. YouTube TV will gain the 24-7 weather service this year, according to a press release from Allen Media Group and Google.

The addition is a big deal because The Weather Channel had been limited to two of the smallest streaming platforms -- FuboTV and DirecTV Stream. It also fills a pretty big void in the YouTube TV lineup, which doesn't currently have an all-day weather channel. YouTube TV is believed to be the second-largest streaming service in the United States. It last announced a ballpark figure of "more than 3 million subscribers" in October 2020. It hasn't given any sort of update since then. For context, Hulu with Live TV has a publicly announced 4 million paid subscribers.
