Marshall’s newest wireless headphones may be smaller, but promise big sound

Earlier in 2016, Marshall released its first set of Bluetooth headphones. They certainly looked the part, with an exterior that instantly brought its legendary amplifiers to mind. The more surprising part was how good they sounded, especially at the price point. Now Marshall has released another set of wireless headphones that decreases the size but keeps everything else cranked to 11.

Unlike the Major II Bluetooth headphones, the Marshall Mid Bluetooth opt for an on-ear design, cutting down the bulk. The company’s signature black and gold look is still here, as is the plush headband and ear cushions that made the company’s previous wireless cans so comfortable.

Despite the overall smaller size of the headphones, they pack in the same size of drivers as the Major II Bluetooth — 40mm to be exact — and claim the same frequency range of 10 kHz to 20 kHz. We cannot speak to the sound here, but if it is anything similar to Marshall’s previous set of wireless headphones, buyers can expect fairly solid sound reproduction with a slight emphasis on bass.

While the style was certainly welcome, one of the most impressive features of the Major II Bluetooth was the 30-hour battery life. Thankfully, Marshall has kept that feature with the Mid Bluetooth, meaning listeners can easily cruise through an entire day without having to reach for the included Micro USB cable. In case you actually do run out of battery — or if you simply do not want to go wireless — a 3.5mm cable is included and the headphones will work passively.

The headphones feature aptX for improved sound quality and lip sync when watching movies and offer the standard range of up to 30 feet. The analog control knob featured on the company’s previous wireless headphones is also here, offering control over playback, volume, and power via a single button. A microphone is even built in to allow users to make and take calls.

The Marshall Mid Bluetooth headphones are available through select retailers and online for $200.

Cambridge Audio’s first wireless headphones boast AB amplification, long battery life
Cambridge Audio Melomania P100 wireless headphones.

Cambridge Audio is no stranger to the audiophile world or its denizens, who like to obsess over sound quality. So it's no surprise that the company's first set of wireless headphones -- the Melomania P100 -- have a bunch of features aimed squarely at this market. You can buy the new noise-canceling cans for $279 in either black or white starting in July at both cambridgeaudio.com and Amazon.

Design-wise, the P100 may share many design traits with other flagship headphones -- the aluminum and plastic materials are especially reminiscent of Bose's recently released QuietComfort Ultra Headphones -- but under the surface lurks an unusual feature: The company has equipped the P100 with AB amplification, typically reserved for dedicated hi-fi components. It's the same audiophile-grade technology that Cambridge Audio used in its Melomania M100 wireless earbuds.

Jabra will no longer make its Elite wireless earbuds or headphones
Jabra Elite 10 earbuds in front of case.

On the same day that Jabra announced its latest generation of wireless earbuds, the company has unexpectedly called it quits for the entire consumer audio category. In a press release that cites the rising costs of competition, GN (Jabra's parent company) announced its intent to "gradually wind-down its Elite and Talk product lines to further increase focus and resources on more attractive parts of GN’s business."

The new Gen 2 products -- the Elite 8 Active and Elite 10 Generation 2 -- will be the last two product introductions in this product line, but they will remain available through 2024 and beyond. A Jabra spokesperson told Digital Trends that "customers will be able to buy them in the usual online and retail channels, as well as Jabra.com, and products will still be supported throughout their lifetime, as normal."
