Got a PS5? Here’s how to get 6 free months of Apple Music

Apple is offering PlayStation 5 (PS5) owners six free months of its Apple Music streaming service.

In a deal with PlayStation maker Sony, Apple is letting PS5 owners enjoy all the benefits of the music streaming service, which offers around 100 million tracks for ad-free listening.

The offer is available in 68 countries and sign-up is available through November 15, 2024.

After activating the free trial on a PS5 device, you can use Apple Music not only on the console but also on a smartphone, PC, tablet, or any other device that offers Apple Music.

Here’s what you need to do:
– Find the Apple Music app from your PS5 console’s search bar, or find it under All apps in Media home.
– Download and open the Apple Music app and follow the on-screen instructions.
– Sign in with your Apple ID or create an Apple ID if you don’t already have one.

Folks who are happy to stick with the service at the end of the free trial will be charged $11 a month for the individual plan, $17 a month for a family plan with unlimited access for up to six people, or $6 a month if you’re a student.

Don’t have a PS5 but want to try Apple Music for free? There are several other ways you can take the service for a spin without handing over any cash. For example, the company is currently offering a one-month free trial that can be launched via a simple sign-up process.

Six months of free Apple Music is also available when you purchase AirPods Pro or AirPods buds, AirPods Max headphones, the HomePod or HomePod Mini smart speaker, or various Beats audio devices.

A one-month free trial of Apple One includes not only Apple Music but also Apple TV+, Apple Arcade, iCloud+, News+, and more. An individual plan for Apple One starts at $20 a month.

I was a PlayStation Portal hater. Now it’s one of my go-to gaming devices

In November, I reviewed the PlayStation Portal. I was mixed on Sony’s streaming handheld at the time, frustrated with a corner-cutting execution of a good idea. It seemed like a poor value compared to simply slapping a cheaper Backbone controller on a phone. As is often the case with tech reviews, though, I only had a short window to test it out where I was more focused on the more objective side of what the Portal does and doesn’t do. Would my feelings change when I was using it naturally?

I’ve gotten the answer to that question over the past few months. While I barely touched my Portal after reviewing it in 2023, it’s quickly become a go-to device in my home as of January. I’m now breaking it out at least once a week, finding some practical use cases for it. Though my overall assessment of it hasn’t changed, I have a more tangible understanding of where it can be a useful -- if superfluous -- PS5 companion. It’s a needless luxury, but one that I’m finding that I'm happy to indulge in.

The PlayStation Portal’s launch just so happened to come right before a major life change that would shift my perspective. After living alone for three years, my girlfriend moved into my apartment last December. It’s been a natural change that’s working great so far. That shift does come with some lifestyle changes, though. We’re both crammed into a one-bedroom apartment, which means we’re sharing a tight space. We remotely do our jobs feet apart in the same room, and most evenings are spent lounging on the couch.

That's good timing, as a Fallout TV show just released on Amazon Prime this month to positive buzz. Fallout 4 came out for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox One in 2015, and this definitely looks like it will be the most substantial update the game has received since its last expansion was released.

PS Plus Extra subscribers can try two of the month’s biggest PS5 games for free

Both Dave the Diver and Tales of Kenzera: ZAU will launch for PlayStation 5 this month, and both will included in PlayStation Plus Premium and Extra's Game Catalog from day one.

Dave the Diver will be the first to be added, as its PS5 port launches on April 16. Dave the Diver was a surprise hit when it was released for PC in 2023, standing out as a charming game where players go diving for the seafood they then serve in their sushi restaurant. While it was controversially nominated for best indie at The Game Awards despite being developed by Nexon studio Mintrocket, it's still a fantastic game and well worth your time when it finally launches on PS5 in a couple of weeks.
