Honor’s Magic V foldable reappears flaunting a more premium look than the Fold 3

Honor has been teasing the impending launch of its first full-fledged foldable phone for the past few weeks now. The Honor Magic V first appeared in an official teaser video on Honor’s Twitter account in December. Earlier this week, the company confirmed a January 10 launch date for the phone, but Honor has tried hard to ensure we did not see a full image of the phone before launch.

Fortunately for us, Honor’s plan to keep the Honor Magic V’s chic looks under wraps fell flat on its face after the Chinese edition of Esquire magazine went ahead and posted an image of the Honor Magic V on its Weibo account. The image shows the Honor Magic V in the palm of Chinese actress Song Yi.

The unit Yi has seems to feature a hitherto unseen vegan/faux leather finish on the phone’s rear panel. Past glimpses of the phone have always shown the device in a silver/metallic trim. The image also shows the phone’s metal frame and speaker grilles that point upward. We have already seen the triple camera array in previous photos. The image also shows the power and volume buttons on the right side.

An expensive Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 alternative?

A few hours after the picture leaked, another post went up on Weibo — apparently from a launch rehearsal for the Honor Magic 3. Someone there apparently managed to grab an image of the supposed pricing of the Magic V. From the picture, we can make out that the phone will come in two variants:

  • Honor Magic V 12/256GB – 13,999 yuan ($2,200)
  • Honor Magic V 12/256GB – 14,999 yuan ($2,350)

While the bit about the two variants might well be correct, there is a good chance that the prices mentioned here are just there as placeholders. Even though the Honor Magic V may never make it out of China, in the eventuality that it does, it will need to be priced on par or well below the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 for it to be even remotely competitive.

From what is known thus far, the Honor Magic V could likely get the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip and will run Android 12. If it launches outside of China, the phone will also support Google Services. Other rumored features include a 50MP primary camera, support for 66-watt fast charging, and high refresh rate internal (120Hz) and external (90Hz) screens.

The Honor Magic V — foldable rival to the Fold 3 — finally gets a launch date
A silhouette showing the outline of the Honor Magic V -- the comoany's upcoming foldable smartphone.

After freeing itself from Huawei's shackles, things seem to be looking great for Honor. The company launched several promising smartphones in 2021, including the Honor 60 series, the Honor 50 series, and the Honor Magic 3 lineup -- and seems to have much bigger plans for 2022. These plans also include their first-ever foldable smartphone - the Honor Magic V - which has finally received its official launch date.

In late December 2021, the company teased the Honor Magic V for the first time with a slick-looking video (embedded below) on its social media accounts. Today, Honor Global tweeted out a message that confirms that their first-ever foldable smartphone will be formally unveiled on January 10. The event, unsurprisingly, will be held in China and will be livestreamed across the globe starting at 6:30 am ET.

The foldable segment seems to be blowing up in China even as Samsung dominates internationally. Smartphone manufacturers are delivering their own Galaxy Z Fold 3 competitors. Recently, it was Oppo with the Find N. Now, Honor has announced that it will be launching its first foldable smartphone soon called the Honor Magic V.

The teaser image doesn't reveal much, but the smartphone looks like an inward-folding phone that transforms to a tablet when unfolded, so pretty standard with the rest of the market. We don't have information on the specifications or the features as of now.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the most durable foldable phone ever
The Samsung Galazy Z Fold 3 and Z Flip 3.

The results are in. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 3 is the strongest foldable phone based on testing by Allstate Protection Plans. The durability testing process included folding and unfolding the phone repeatedly with the Foldbot, open and closed facedown drop tests, and a dunk test. Results for the fold test are still pending, as is testing for the Z Flip 3, but Allstate believes the phones should have no problem lasting up to 200,000 folds.

On the open drop test, the Z Fold 3 was dropped six feet onto a sidewalk and had minor corner scuffing and minimal pixel damage. This is the first smartphone that hasn't shattered since Allstate begin breakability testing in 2013. The phone also sustained no damage after a 30-minute dunk in five feet of water. Allstate's Dropbot did manage to take down the Z Fold 3 during the closed facedown drop test. The phone was deemed unusable when the exterior screen shattered on the first test.
