How to buy the iPad Pro (2020)

The new iPad Pro is here. This power tablet features dual cameras and is compatible with Apple’s Magic Keyboard, the 4th-generation iPad Pro (2020) aims to merge the utility of a laptop with the portability of a tablet. It also features an updated Liquid Retina display with TrueTone and ProMotion capabilities, while its lidar scanner makes it the tablet of choice for augmented reality. It is the ultimate Apple tablet — at least until the next one.

You may, therefore, like to know how you can get your hands on one. Well, below you’ll find a guide explaining where the iPad Pro 2020 can be bought, and what you’ll have to pay for each model.

Unlocked

Apple

As usual, you can buy the iPad Pro 2020 from Apple’s website. Prices for the 11-inch model begin from $799, while prices for the 12.9-inch version begin from $999.

  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 128GB: $799
  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 256GB: $899
  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 512GB: $1,099
  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 1TB: $1,299

Those are the prices for the 11-inch iPad Pro model. But here are Apple’s prices in case you want that bigger 12.9-inch screen.

  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 128GB: $999
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 256GB: $1,099
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 512GB: $1,299
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 1TB: $1,499

It’s also worth pointing out that, for each of the eight models above, you can choose the “Wi-Fi + Cellular” option. For $150 extra, your iPad Pro will be able to connect to a mobile data network, as well as to Wi-Fi networks. Of course, you’ll need a SIM card (and likely a contract) from a mobile carrier to be able to connect to a mobile data network.

Also, Apple does run a trade-in scheme for more recent iPad models. This can save you up to $480 when purchasing an iPad Pro 2020. You can check whether your existing iPad is eligible during checkout on the Apple website.

Best Buy

Best Buy is another outlet selling the iPad Pro 2020 right now. As of writing, its prices closely match those you can find on the official Apple website. But it may be worth checking back again in the not-too-distant future, since Best Buy does sometimes run discounts and special offers.

Also, Best Buy allows you to purchase a new iPad Pro through monthly installments. This can make a purchase more affordable, but in some cases, please note that you may end up paying more overall, due to interest.

  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 128GB: $800, or $66.67 per month for 12 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 256GB: $900, or $75.00 per month for 12 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 512GB: $1,100, or $91.67 per month for 12 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 1TB: $1,300, or $108.34 per month for 12 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 128GB: $1,000, or $83.34 per month for 12 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 256GB: $1,100, or $91.67 per month for 12 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 512GB: $1,300, or $108.34 per month for 12 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 1TB: $1,500, or $125 per month for 12 months

As with Apple, Best Buy offers the option of buying a “Wi-Fi + Cellular” model for an extra $150. This adds $12.50 per month if you pay through monthly installments. Also, remember that if you’re on an installment plan but fail to pay everything off within 12 months, Best Buy will start charging you interest.

Cellular carriers

If you’re interested in buying an iPad Pro 2020 that comes with cellular connectivity as well as Wi-Fi connectivity, it may be a good option to buy it straight from mobile carriers. That way, you can purchase a cellular contract with your new iPad.

AT&T

At the moment, AT&T’s website is offering only the 12.9-inch iPad Pro. Also, it’s only offering Wi-Fi + Cellular models, which is unsurprising really.

  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 128GB: $1,150, or $38.34 per month for 30 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 256GB: $1,250, or $41.67 per month for 30 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 512GB: $1,450, or $48.34 per month for 30 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 1TB: $1,650, or $55 per month for 30 months

Note that the above prices don’t include a mobile data plan. AT&T’s DataConnect 15GB plan currently costs $60 per month, while its DataConnect 35GB plan costs $85 per month. As such, buying a 12.9-inch iPad Pro 128GB on installments would cost a total of $98.34 per month, if opting for the DataConnect 15GB plan. Also factor in a one-time activation fee (usually around $30).

Sprint

On Sprint’s website you can purchase the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2020 models, although you can’t currently find the 1TB 11-inch version. Again, these are the “Wi-Fi + Cellular” versions.

  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 128GB: $950, or $39.59 per month for 24 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 256GB: $1,050, or $39.59 per month for 24 months and $100 upfront
  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 512GB: $1,250, or $39.59 per month for 24 months and $300 upfront

Note that, except for the 128GB versions, all iPad Pro models require a one-time payment if you choose to pay via installments.

  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 128GB: $1,150, or $47.92 per month for 24 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 256GB: $1,250, or $47.92 per month for 24 months and $100 upfront
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 512GB: $1,450, or $47.92 per month for 24 months and $300 upfront
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 1TB: $1,650, or $47.92 per month for 24 months and $500 upfront

Of course, you will still need to pay for a cellular data plan on top of the cost of the iPad Pro itself. With Sprint, it’s offering its Unlimited Tablet Plan, which at $30 (currently reduced to $25) per month gives you unlimited streaming and unlimited 4G data.

T-Mobile

As with AT&T, T-Mobile is currently offering only the 12.9-inch iPad Pro 2020. Also, it currently isn’t offering the 1TB 12.9-inch model.

  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 128GB: $1,150, or $30 per month for 24 months and $430 upfront
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 256GB: $1,250, or $30 per month for 24 months and $530 upfront
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 512GB: $1,450, or $30 per month for 24 months and $730 upfront

All three are the “Wi-Fi + Cellular” models, so all three require you to take out a mobile data contract with T-Mobile. At the moment, it’s offering tablet buyers an “Essentials” plan, which costs $60 per month for one line, and also its “Magenta” plan at $70 per month for one line.

Verizon

Verizon is offering the 11-inch and 12.9-inch versions of the iPad Pro 2020. Again, these are the “Wi-Fi + Cellular” versions.

  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 128GB: $950, or $39.58 per month for 24 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 256GB: $1,050, or $43.74 per month for 24 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 512GB: $1,250, or $52.08 per month for 24 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 11-inch 1TB: $1,450, or $60.41 per month for 24 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 128GB: $1,150, or $47.91 per month for 24 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 256GB: $1,250, or $52.08 per month for 24 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 512GB: $1,450, or $60.41 per month for 24 months
  • iPad Pro (2020) 12.9-inch 1TB: $1,650, or $68.74 per month for 24 months

On top of these prices, Verizon offers connected device data plans for tablets starting at $20 per month for unlimited 5G data.

U.S. Cellular

U.S. Cellular is also offering the iPad Pro 2020, although only the 12.9-inch model. All of its contracts last for 36 months, and start from $31.90 for the 128GB model and end at $45.80 for the 1TB, with no down payment.

Xfinity Mobile

Xfinity is selling the 11-inch and 12.9-inch versions of the iPad Pro 2020. However, it’s offering only the 128GB versions of both models.

iPad Pro with next-gen M5 silicon could arrive later this year
Magic Keyboard and iPad Pro.

It seems tablets are increasingly becoming the unofficial launch testbed for Apple’s next-gen silicon. The 2024 iPad Pro marked the debut of Apple’s M4 chip, ahead of its appearance inside the Mac hardware.
Carrying forward the torch, the next iPad Pro refresh could be “one of the first devices” to get a M5 series processor. According to Bloomberg, the next-gen iPad Pro has progressed into the advanced stages of internal testing. Moreover, it is expected to hit the shelves later this year, likely in the Fall season.
Apple gave the M4 series refresh to the Mac lineup, including the MacBook Air, Pro, and Studio models, earlier this year. The M4 Pro and M4 Max processors were only introduced late last year, so it seems increasingly plausible that the baseline M5 would arrive later this year, followed by its Pro, Max, or Ultra variants.
Given the “freshness” status of the current Mac hardware, the upcoming iPad Pro seems like the first candidate to get a taste of the next-gen M5 processor. “The new versions of that model, code-named J817, J818, J820 and J821, are in late testing within Apple and on track for production in the second half of this year,” adds the report.
What to expect from M5 iPad Pro?

Starting with the design , Apple is not expected to make any notable changes, given the company’s history. The iPad Pro got a major design overhaul in 2024, embracing a super-sleek look, one fewer camera, and a new keyboard accessory to go with it.
As far as the silicon goes, the M5 series will reportedly be based on the 3nm process and built atop ARM’s next-gen CPU architecture. In addition to the 2025 iPad Pro, Apple is also expected to launch new MacBook Pro models later this year, armed with an M5-tier processor.

The iPad doesn’t need AI, but Apple must fix something else
Top view of the rear shell on the 11th Gen iPad.

I just finished testing the new entry-level iPad, and so far, I am fairly impressed by the tablet. You can’t get a better value than this slate for $349. From the external hardware to the innards, there is hardly any alternative from the Android side that can deliver a superior experience.
This year, Apple delivered a couple of surprises, in addition to the expected chip upgrade. You now get twice the storage for the same ask, and the RAM has also been bumped up. In a nutshell, it’s faster, better at multi-tasking, and without any storage headaches, even if your budget is tight.
Apple, however, hasn’t fixed the software situation with iPadOS, which continues to bother with its fair share of quirks in tow. This year, however, the software gulf is even wider between the baseline iPad and every other tablet in Apple’s portfolio. Stage Manager has been the big differentiator so far, but in 2025, we have another deep chasm.

A good riddance with AI

Is the base iPad too popular to get Apple Intelligence?
iPad (2025) colors.

In an age where Apple is all about its AI powered Apple Intelligence, it seems odd that it hasn't crammed it into the base model iPad (2025). Why that is may have now become clearer.

On the surface there's the obvious hardware issue of the base iPad simply not packing enough punch to keep up with the AI. But Apple would have known this in advance, so it presumably chose to leave this model of iPad a little behind in terms of AI upgrades.
