Samsung Galaxy Fold Lite with $900 price tag reportedly in the works

Samsung is said to be working on a much cheaper version of the Galaxy Fold, which will reportedly be sold at less than half of the smartphone’s $2,000 price tag.

The Galaxy Fold 2, which is expected to be unveiled at an August 5 streaming event, may be a bit cheaper than its predecessor, but still expensive at about $1,800. There have been rumors that there will be an entry-level Galaxy Fold, and according to SamMobile, it will be called the Galaxy Fold Lite.

The Galaxy Fold Lite, meanwhile, will launch at about $900, SamMobile reported, citing a South Korean online publication. The phone was initially planned to be part of the August 5 event, but Samsung has apparently postponed its launch to 2021.

Samsung has a history of releasing Lite versions of its flagship smartphones, with the Galaxy S10 Lite and Galaxy Note 10 Lite. There are also rumors that a similar model, internally known as the Galaxy S20 Fan Edition, will be released for the company’s current flagship device.

A Galaxy Fold Lite is certainly within the realm of possibility, but Samsung will need to make drastic cuts to halve the folding smartphone’s price tag. The hinge and foldable display will likely stay as those are the trademark features of the device, so Samsung may be looking at cutting costs through the cover display, camera setup, and internal specs, according to SamMobile.

Samsung Galaxy Fold 2 rumors

Samsung may roll out a ceramic option for the Galaxy Fold 2, which is expected to have a 7.7-inch screen, larger than the 7.3-inch screen of the Galaxy Fold. The upcoming smartphone may also address the scratch-prone plastic screen of the Galaxy Fold by using ultra-thin glass for the display.

Samsung will also reportedly scrap the plan to include the S Pen in the Galaxy Fold 2, so that the smartphone’s weight will be reduced compared with its predecessor, despite the larger screen.

Hinge view of OnePlus Open foldable phone.

OnePlus’ first foldable smartphone — the OnePlus Open — has had a far smoother sailing compared to Samsung’s debut. Of course, OnePlus relied heavily on sister company Oppo’s foldable experience to deliver a knockout device. The end product feels significantly more refined from an aesthetic perspective and raw camera prowess compared to Samsung’s latest offering.

But getting the hardware is only half the job done when it comes to foldable devices. Surprisingly, the OnePlus Open delivers a UI experience more polished than I had anticipated. I’ve been pushing the device for the past few weeks, and more than neat tricks, I’ve been surprised by the sheer fluidity of the OxygenOS experience on this one. The experience is particularly rewarding for app multitasking, and notably, it involves fewer barriers compared to what Samsung serves with One UI 6.

A person folding up the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5.

That’s it: the Samsung Galaxy Z Flip 5 has completely changed the way I feel about foldable smartphones.

When the phone was released, its advances over the Galaxy Z Flip 4 prompted me to buy it instead of upgrading my Galaxy Z Fold 4 to a Galaxy Z Fold 5, and now having returned to it after several months, I know I made the right decision. Here’s why.

Samsung just did something strange to its newest Android phone
The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE laying face-down on a table.

Earlier this month, Samsung announced a slew of new products to end 2023 on a high note. Alongside some new tablets and a pair of earbuds, one of those new products was the Galaxy S23 FE. It looks a lot like the other S23 phones released earlier this year, but it has some lower specs and a cheaper price. When Samsung announced the S23 FE on October 3, it said the phone would be available for $600.

However, it looks like something changed between then and now. The Galaxy S23 FE officially went on sale on October 26, but it doesn't cost the $600 Samsung claimed it would. If you buy the phone from Samsung's website, you'll have to pay $630 for the base model with 128GB of storage — a seemingly random increase of $30. Samsung didn't previously confirm how much the 256GB variant would cost, but it's currently listed on Samsung's site for $690.
