Airplay 2

Samsung is now the first manufacturer to offer the Apple TV app and AirPlay 2 to TVs outside of Apple's own Apple TV boxes. Starting today, all 2019 models and select 2018 models will be updated with these key Apple services and technologies. Samsung's search, Bixby, and Universal Guide will work with the Apple TV app.

Roku has reportedly finalized a deal with Apple that will provide the streaming video device maker access to Apple's Airplay 2 protocol. This means iOS and Mac users can stream their favorite content to Roku devices with unprecedented ease, and may cause some potential Apple TV buyers to look elsewhere.

At CES 2019, we learned that several major TV manufacturers would be adding AirPlay 2 compatibility to their lineups. Vizio was among this small list, and now appears it will be the first to launch it. The company has opened sign-ups for the beta of SmartCast 3.0, which will enable AirPlay 2 later this year.

There's 8K and then there's 8K. The difference? Size. At least, that's what Samsung appears out to prove with its latest announcement from CES 2019: A massive, 98-inch 8K QLED TV. Though there's no word on price, we do know it will have AirPlay 2, and an exclusive Apple partnership at launch.

Last year, Sonos announced that it would be bringing support for Apple’s AirPlay 2 to its multiroom wireless speakers. Now the company has clarified that while newer models like the Sonos One will get support, older models like the Play:1 don’t have the horsepower necessary to use it.

Apple has finally taken the wraps off of iOS 11.4, which boasts a host of new features, including one that could help make home audio a whole lot better than it already is -- AirPlay 2. It offers multiroom audio and the ability to link HomePod speakers in a stereo pair.
