Apex Legends is a solid battle royale game, but I can’t shake the feeling that its creation was dictated by Respawn’s new owners: Electronic Arts. In the process, the studio’s soul could be lost, forced to play follow-the-leader like so many other of EA’s other development teams.

Apex Legends came out of nowhere to take the top spot as battle royale in 2019, and it now looks as if it'll be the biggest game of the year. Its sudden success proves the battle royale fad still has plenty of life left in it, and the biggest games may yet to come.

Riding on the coattails of World of Warcraft and Grand Theft Auto V is an incredible number of games that have adopted the live service model. Fornite and Apex Legends dominate our attention as my backlog of games suffer, and it appears the gaming industry is struggling to keep up as well.

Respawn Entertainment has banned over 355,000 cheaters on the PC version of Apex Legends, with the help of the Easy-Anti-Cheat system. The studio revealed some of its plans in how to prevent the problem from getting worse, including the addition of an in-game report feature and a bigger anti-cheat team.

According to a report from Daily Esports, a new character named Octane is set to arrive in Apex Legends around March 12. This will also apparently be when the game's Battle Pass launches, offering cosmetic items up for those who purchase it. The game passed 50 million players in just one month.

Fortnite may soon add the respawn mechanic, which was popularized by the surprise Battle Royale hit Apex Legends. Gamers have discovered files related to the Second Chance Van and the Second Chance Card, and have pieced together that respawning in Fortnite will likely work much like in Apex Legends.

Respawn added the first piece of new content to Apex Legends, the Havoc energy rifle. It's available now for PS4, Xbox One, and PC players. The fully automatic rifle can be modded to shoot single-shot energy beams and is compatible with the Turbocharger mod to let it fire at top speed.

Dataminers have discovered code in Apex Legends that refers to characters named Octane and Wattson, and weapons named the Havoc Rifle and the L-Star EMG. Octane is believed to have a Stim Pack ability, which is likely similar to the Stim ability of Titanfall 2, while Wattson has the Tesla Trap.

A newly discovered Apex Legends bug gives players easy wins by trapping them in the Supply Ship, where they are immune to damage while the circle closes in on their opponents. Respawn Entertainment, the studio behind the battle royale shooter, said that a patch to fix the issue is on the way.

Respawn Entertainment's Apex Legends was able to get more than 1 million unique players in just eight hours. The battle royale shooter is a spinoff of the Titanfall series, and is set after the events of Titanfall 2. It's available now on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, but doesn't support cross-play.

In an FAQ on the EA website, it was revealed that Apex Legends players can expect seasonal rewards and a Battle Pass to arrive in March. Similar to Fortnite's own seasonal content, players will be able to earn exclusive skins, Apex Packs, and more by advancing through 100 levels of rewards.

Apex Legends, which may have what it takes to challenge Fortnite, currently only allows players to enter battle royale matches in groups of three. That may soon change though, as datamined code allegedly refers to Solo Mode and 2-Man Squads, which will allow players to fight alone or with one partner.
