LG announces 84-Inch 3DTV to be unveiled at CES 2012

Set to be displayed to the public at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas next month, television manufacturer LG is going to show off an 84-inch 3D Ultra Definition (UD) television that’s capable of 4K resolution. Designed to display a pixel density that’s four times any 1080p television, the 84-inch behemoth offers a resolution of 3840 by 2160 or eight million pixels. The flat panel utilizes a embedded 2D-to-3D conversion engine that allows viewers to watch 2D content in a simulated 3D format. In addition, consumers can play with the 3D Depth Control to modify the 3D effect that’s being created during the 2D-to-3D conversion process.

LG also offers the ability to control sound processing with the 3D Sound Zooming function which allows users to digitally place themselves within the 3D sound field using only the front two speakers. The panel also connects to the Smart TV application storefront and allows the user to peruse and install up to 1,200 different applications on the television. LG has dubbed the control for the television as the “Magic Remote” and it will include voice recognition technology for controlling television functions as well as gesture control similar to a Nintendo Wii control.

Similar to the massive displays from Sharp and Panasonic that were displayed at previous trade shows, this panel is unlikely to be within the financial reach of the majority of consumers. It’s likely designed to pull in crowds of people at the show in order to promote other LG products like the recently announced OLED panel that’s the world’s largest at 55 inches as well as super-thin flat panels that are no ticker than a pencil. No pricing has been released at the time of the announcement and LG hasn’t released any information on the amount of 3D glasses that come with the 84-inch panel or the cost of those glasses.

For those with lots of cash to spare while looking for headphone deals to buy, you may want to turn your attention to this pair from Dyson -- yes, the brand known for cordless vacuums and bladeless fans. The Dyson Zone, which are noise-canceling headphones with an air purifying function, are available from Best Buy with a $200 discount that slashes their price from $700 to $500. You need to hurry with your purchase if you're interested though, as the offer may expire at any moment.

On the surface, the Dyson Zone appear to be your regular wireless headphones, albeit with a premium price. They offer active noise cancellation using eight microphones that can block unwanted sounds so that you can maintain your focus, and a battery that can last up to 50 hours on a single charge with ANC activated. Legacy cable company invents $180-a-year streaming bundle

If you're a customer of Comcast's Xfinity internet or TV business, you now have a new bundle of streaming apps available at a discount. For $15 a month, Xfinity StreamSaver (because you can't sell something that already exists without giving it a funny name, apparently) brings together Netflix, Peacock, and Apple TV+. It'll all be available through Comcast's hardware, of course, but also on other platforms.

On their own, the three services would cost a minimum of $23 a month. That's $7 for Netflix with ads at 1080p resolution, $6 for Peacock Premium with ads, and $10 for Apple TV+. And as it turns out, that's the same level of service you'll get with StreamSaver, saving you about $96 a year. And if you want to get rid of ads or get 4K resolution on Netflix, you can pay the difference for that higher service tier.
