Time Warner Buying Most of Midway Games for $33 Mln

Time Warner Buying Most of Midway Games for $33 Mln

Midway Games—the company that served as home to Mortal Combat, Wheelman, Joust, Gauntlet, Spy Hunter, and many other well-known titles—has had more of its assets acquired by Time Warner for $33 million at bankruptcy auction. The sale was approved on July 2, and will become final within ten days. Under the terms of the arrangement, Time Warner gets the majority of Midway’s game properties and assets, although there are a few exceptions: Midway’s San Diego and Newcastle studios aren’t part of the deal, and the film company Thresher Entertainment claims it controls most of the intellectual property for Mortal Kombat, meaning a new deal will likely have to be worked out with Time Warner before any new Mortal Kombat titles appear.

Midway Tightens Belt, Cuts Game Deals

Midway Tightens Belt, Cuts Game Deals

Game publisher Midway has announced that it has “optimized” its game licensing, which will result in the cancellation of future games that aren’t build on what Midway considers its “core” properties. Although the company did not offer a list of game titles that will be discontinued, the company seems pretty sold on its Unreal and Mortal Kombat franchise, so it would also be safe to assume its partnerships with DC Comics and TNA Wrestling are still intact. The company also has licensing deals with Major League Baseball and the National Basketball Association; the status of those deals is not known at this time.

Game Party 2 for Wii Intros Five New Games

Sticking to the tried-and-true formula of casual mini-games for the Nintendo Wii, Midway Games announced Game Party 2 on Monday, a sequel to its last collection of Wii games. The game revisits the original title with some overlapping diversions along with five all-new minigames.

“The success of the original Game Party was a result of consumers looking for fun, family-oriented party games for the Wii,” Midway’s senior VP of publishing, Miguel Iribarren. “Game Party 2 expands and enhances the original, leveraging Midway’s rich arcade heritage, and delivering more games that are a ton of fun and easy to pick-up and play with friends.”

LOTR Online: One Game to Rule Them All

Midway looks like it might have a hit on its hands, trumpeting sales figures from NPD Group and others that list The Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar as the top-selling PC game in both North America and Europe. According to NPD, the game’s standard edition and special edition managed to capture the top two sales slots last week, bumping perpetual top-seller World of Warcraft and its newer Burning Crusade expansion pack to third and fourth place, respectively. The Sims 2: Seasons expansion landed in the fifth slot.

Midway Sues Sony Ericsson

Midway said in its complaint, filed on June 24 in US District Court in Delaware, that Sony Ericsson included ‘Defender’ on some of its cellphones, including its T68 model. Midway, which also named the US unit of Sony Ericsson part owner, Ericsson, in its suit, said it never authorized distribution or copying of ‘Defender’. In the complaint, Midway claimed its business and property has been ‘severely injured’ as a result. It requested that the court award it damages and reimbursement of its legal fees and require Sony Ericsson to turn over all mobile phones, software, and other materials in its possession related to the alleged copyright violation. An Ericsson spokesperson declined to comment, saying that the company had not yet been formally served with the lawsuit. A lawyer representing Midway, Michael Bonkowski, confirmed the existence of the suit, but declined to provide additional comment.
