Windows 7 Loses to Windows XP in Netbook Battery Life

acer-aspire-oneWith Windows Vista, Microsoft revamped many features and piled on a lot of functionality that Windows XP didn’t have — among other things improving security. An unfortunate side effect of this, though was that Windows Vista was much bulkier than Windows XP and more battery hungry. As a result, up until October most netbooks used Windows XP.

With Windows 7, more new features were added, but this time a more disciplined approach concerning OS bulk was taken, helped, in part, by a large public testing phase. Windows 7 was trimmed down from Vista both in memory and install size, and many of its critical metrics (boot time, etc.) approached the high bar set by Windows XP.

Microsoft Manager Claims Windows 7 was Inspired by OS X

apple-v-microsoftA Microsoft advertising executive, speaking with the site PCR, went on record to say that he believed Windows 7’s design to be inspired by OS X. Now Microsoft is refuting the quote, which seems bound to wind up in the latest round of “Get a Mac” commercials.

In the interview with PCR, Simon Aldous, Microsoft’s Partner Group Manager is asked, “Is Windows 7 really a much more agile operating system, in terms of the specific uses it can be moulded to?”

He replies:

Windows Update Security Fixes Pass up Windows 7

thumb-windows7-300x169Microsoft’s newest computer operating system has survived its first few weeks on the market without needing any security fixes.

Microsoft Corp. plugged several security holes Tuesday, but none are aimed at Windows 7, which was released Oct. 22.

That’s to be expected, said Ben Greenbaum, a researcher at the antivirus software company Symantec Corp. “Attackers will take more time to figure out ways of breaking into Windows 7,” he said.

Computer users can get the patches through Microsoft’s automatic-update service, or by visiting microsoft.com/security.

Windows 7 Sales Up 234% Compared to Windows Vista

microsoft-medWhile Apple seems to be content with “going negative” when it comes to commercials touting its computing products, Microsoft has taken a different route with Windows 7. Apple has focused more on bashing Windows 7 (and the faults of its predecessors) rather than focus on the main strengths of the OS X platform. Microsoft, on the other hand, has created positive ads which tout the new features in Windows 7.

Windows 7 Upgrade and Sales are ‘Fantastic’ in Japan Says Microsoft’s CEO

steve-ballmerSales of Microsoft Corp.’s new Windows 7 operating system have been “fantastic” in Japan since its launch last month, CEO Steve Ballmer said Thursday.

He declined to provide specific numbers for Japan, which is Microsoft’s second-largest market, but said features like quicker start-up times were luring consumers to the newest version of the world’s dominate software package. He added new computers were also helping attract buyers.

“People don’t buy operating systems, they buy computers with operating systems on them,” Ballmer told reporters during a presentation in Tokyo.

Microsoft CEO: IT Spending Won’t Fully Recover

ballmer

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said Monday corporate spending on information technology will not recover to levels seen in recent years before the global economic slowdown.

“The economy went through a set of changes on a global basis over the course of the last year which are, I think is fair to say, once in a lifetime,” Ballmer told a meeting of South Korean executives in Seoul.

Spending on information technology, which accounted for about half of capital expenditures in developed countries before the crisis, was unlikely to rebound fully because capital was more scarce these days, he said.

Software titan Microsoft has been blitzing the media to let the world know Windows 7 is available and the company thinks people should buy it. Part of that media blitz was to include sponsoring a one-off comedy special on the Fox network, Family Guy Presents: Seth and Alex’s Almost Live Comedy Show on November 8. However, on actually seeing a recording of the show, Microsoft has now withdrawn its sponsorship, saying that the content was not a good match with the Windows brand.
